Get the Dirt on Soil June 16th in Bynum
We’ve got a few spaces left! Join soil scientist Rich Hayes on June 16th from 9:30 to 11:30 am for this free program about soil. Rich will be bringing the Mobile Soils Classroom. Soil has been a neglected natural resource. Soil is a complex ecosystem, a living breathing entity. What exactly is soil? There’s a lot more to dirt than meets the eye. Some soils are really good at holding on to water, and other soil gets picked up and carried down the river very easily. We all have a role to play in protecting and enhancing our greatest national resource, the soils beneath our feet. We’ll get to feel different types of soil samples, see a demonstration of bare versus vegetated soil after rainfall, learn about how soil structure impacts water movement and groundwater retention, and look at soil at the micro level to see what lives in soil.
Meet in the Bynum Mill parking lot off Bynum Church Road in the Lower Haw River State Natural Area. RSVP to gretchen_smith@bellsouth.
