The CSA monument in Pittsboro was not put up in order to honor “veterans of all wars” but as an act of intimidation for people of color during the height of the Jim Crow era. Robert E. Lee himself was opposed to Civil War monuments of any kind, and the fact that it was erected 50 years after the end of the war points to an ulterior motive.

If the base is damaged, I would suggest we use this to discuss moving the statue away from the courthouse to a more historic context. I’m eager to hear the thoughts of others on the list.
