Subject: Speeding on Hwy 902/87 South of West St.
I moved from PBO to Durham several months ago because of non-enforcement of traffic speed limits on that stretch of the highway. My neighbors and I routinely clocked logging trucks and domestic vehicles at 50 mph in a 35 mph zone.
I contacted Chief of PBO police Percy Cruthfield four times by email and talking with him personally. He said they can’t enforce the law there because there are only three officers on patrol at a time. But the officers on patrol certainly try to catch people driving in and out of the circle. Cruthfield also told me that it was not their responsibility because it was a state highway
Pittsboro town ordinance Chapter 21, POLICE, Article I. In General, States that:
21 – 4.00
Powers and duties of police officers.
“Each police officer shall:
4.01 Have within the corporate limits of the town, and within the territory extending three (3) miles from the corporate limits, all of the powers vested in law enforcement by statute or common law.
and
4.03 Rigidly enforce all laws, ordinances and regulations of the town and the state.”
So this attitude by Crutchfield is illegal according to the Pittsboro ordinances and he needs to be aware of his job description.
I also contacted the Chatham County Sheriff’s department about this and they said because it was in Pittsboro it was not their problem. Although they routinely patrol Highway 15-501 at the intersection of that and Powell Place Lane and pull people over.
Then I contact NC DPS-Highway Patrol and they also said it was not their problem, it was a Pittsboro Police Dept. problem, even though all the locations I have mentioned above are State and or Federal Highways
Sounds like somebody’s got way to much time on their hands…
