Subject: Deer population
If you look at historical sites regarding deer and according to a recent documentary on PBS on the history of various deer in the U.S., there are more today than ever.
American Indian diet was mainly Buffalo, fish, and rabbits. In the early days of the nation there were fewer than 300,000 deer. In the 1920’s it ballooned due to urbanization and now there are more than ever.
It is not because we are ruining their habitat, it is that with developing land we attract them with easy buffets of flowers and green grass. Controls on hunting has let them overbreed according to a professor at UNC. In the 50’s the population was around 18 million.
