Subject: Statistical data on poverty in Chatham

Christy and I participate together in the Circles Chatham program where I was the childcare coordinator for 2013/2014. She isn’t anonymous 🙂 Circles is as wonderful as she says. She is paraphrasing statistics at the Circles web page (www.circleschatham.org/).
That data is available in a couple of places, and the 1 in 3 number for Siler City is probably extrapolated from census data, the latest complete batch being from 2010, I believe. I imagine there is more recent data available that shows a rise in those numbers. The links I used are referenced at the end of this post.
*The basic data: * the 2010 census shows 7,880 people in Siler City, 2,348 of whom were under the age of 18. Economic data shows that 22% of people in Siler City lived below the poverty line. While there isn’t any readily available statistic on how many of those are children, a straight line percentage would result in 516 people under 18 in Siler City living in poverty – just about 1 in 4.
