Successful Chatham Senior Games Needs More Participants & Ambassadors
“We are very proud that Chatham County had so many state champions this past year in Senior Games and Silver Arts competition,” said Dennis Streets, e= xecutive director of the Chatham County Council on Aging. Chatham participants earned 43 medals at the state level. A list of state medalists is below.
The Chatham County Council on Aging is the local coordinator for the Senior Games and SilverArts competition.
“We refuse to rest on our laurels,” said Streets. “Our goal is to increase the total number of local participants from 112 to 200 in 2015 and also to add more ambassadors to help us promote the Senior Games and Silver Arts.”
Lindsay Hickling, who coordinates Chatham’s Senior Games, said, “The Senior Games and Silver Arts have been expanded to persons age 50 and better. That means we have over 29,000 eligible participants in Chatham County, or about 44% of our county’s total population. Please come join in the fun, friendship and wellness that come from participation.”
The 2015 Senior Games will take place Friday, April 17, through Friday, May 1, 2015, offering 15 sporting events including tennis, golf, track, swimming, cycling, billiards, bocce, horseshoes, basketball shooting, cornhole, croquet, bowling, fun walk, and football and softball throw.
It also includes a complete package of Silver Arts activities: Heritage Arts (e.g., basket weaving, crocheting, pottery, woodcarving), Literary Arts (e.g., essays, poems), Performing Arts (e.g., comedy/drama, dance, instrumental and vocal), and Visual Arts (e.g., acrylics, oil, photography, sculpture).
The Council on Aging will again partner with many different organizations to offer these varied opportunities, including Chatham County Parks & Recreation, Chatham County Public Health Department, Carolina Meadows, Carolina Preserve, and Galloway Ridge. The Council will also welcome again its growing corps of volunteers who include people of all ages.
As a second goal for this year, Hickling calls for additional volunteer ambassadors to help promote Senior Games and Silver Arts and recruit new participants. “We currently only have one local Ambassador and we want at least four more to cover all parts of Chatham County. Please help us get the word out and let people know how valuable and fun this program is.”

These Chatham residents medaled in competition at the 2014 North Carolina Senior Games and SilverArts State Finals, after qualifying locally in the Chatham County Senior Games this past Spring. Chatham is part of a statewide network of 53 local programs sanctioned by North Carolina Senior Games, Inc.
