Chatham Seeks Public Input on Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan

PITTSBORO – As part of a regional effort to reduce vulnerability to natural disasters, Chatham County is requesting public feedback on natural disaster risk and preparedness.  The planning includes the towns of Pittsboro, Siler City and Goldston.

This feedback will assist the efforts of Chatham, Harnett, Lee, and Moore counties to combine respective local natural hazard mitigation plans into one regional plan.  A mitigation plan identifies and assesses a community’s natural hazard risks, and determines how to best minimize or manage those risks.

A brief survey provides the public an opportunity to share opinions and participate in the regional planning process. Responses will help the planning team to better understand the region’s hazard concerns, which can lead to mitigation activities and help reduce the impact of future hazard events.

By May 16, 2014, you can complete the survey online at:  http://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/1503137/Public-Participation-Survey-for-Hazard-Mitigation-Planning-Cape-Fear.  You also can find the survey link at www.chathamnc.org/planning, www.chathamnc.org/emergencyoperations, www.silercity.org and http://pittsboronc.gov.

By maintaining a Natural Hazards Mitigation Plan, Chatham County is eligible for FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation grants, which provide funds for eligible mitigation activities that reduce disaster losses and protect life and property from future disaster damages. The grants provide funding opportunities for mitigation activities both before and after a disaster, as well as long-term hazard mitigation measures after a Presidential Disaster Declaration. If you have any questions or would like to learn more about disaster preparedness and mitigation, please contact Chatham County Emergency Management at 919-542-2811, extension 6.Debra J.
