Chatham Nonprofit Hosts Groundbreaking for 9/11 First Responders Memorial

The Chatham County 9/11 First Responders Memorial Foundation Corporation wants everyone to know that its members are on the move with plans to build a First Responders Memorial and residents can help get the project off to a successful start.

A groundbreaking has been scheduled for Friday, March 28, 2014 at 1 pm at the memorial site, which is located on 15/501 just south of the traffic circle in Pittsboro, across from the Pittsboro Fire Department.  Bring a shovel to be part of the event.

The memorial will use the donated steel beam from the World Trade Center tragedy as a major focal point.  It will honor all first responders who have given their lives to keep others safe.

The foundation will raise all of the funds for the project through grants and private donations from companies and individuals.

“We greatly appreciate the design work provided by Corley Redfoot Architects,” said Jody Allen, president of the foundation and Goldston firefighter. “The concept is to stand the beam on end, but tilt it at 9 degrees and 11 minutes facing directly toward Ground Zero.”

Allen also commended Foushee Grading of Pittsboro for clearing the site and removing trees.   Phase 1 of the site development will be completed in September 2014.

The foundation is selling Challenge Coins to raise funds for the memorial’s construction, according to board member Joe Fraser. “The cost is just $15 each. Buy several for your friends and family as this will be a great family keepsake for Chatham to treasure for generations.”
