Subject: Mia Munn files for Chatham County School Board
Mia Munn is pleased to announce that she filed as a candidate for Chatham County School Board in District 3 on Friday, February 14, 2014. Munn is registered Unaffiliated because she believes partisan politics have no place in running a school system.
“My goal is that all students graduate from high school prepared for success in college, in a career, and as citizens,” Munn said. “Too many students who graduate from high school require remedial classes when they enroll in a community college or university. 15% of students in Chatham County, and even more statewide, don’t even make it to high school graduation.”
For the past six years, Munn has been a regular attendee at Chatham School Board meetings, distributing her extensive meeting notes to the community through social media. She has been involved in the district’s Raising Achievement/Closing the Gap task force, participated in community work sessions to give input the district’s strategic plan, served on the district budget committee, and was a subcommittee member for the district accreditation process. In addition, Munn mentored an at-risk student from Northwood for the graduation project through Chatham County Together and was an assessor for graduation project presentations at Jordan Mathews.
Munn is currently a data analyst working on contract at Cisco Systems. Earlier in her career, she was a high school and middle school social studies teacher in Chapel Hill and Raleigh and worked in Financial Analysis at GlaxoSmithKline. She is a certified Product Manager (PMP). Munn is a long-time Cub Scout leader and trainer. She has been involved in two institutional building projects, a church and a school. Munn and her husband Dan, Site Manager at Carolina Tiger Rescue, have been married 33 years. They have lived in Chatham County for almost 30 years, and their three adult sons attended Chatham County schools.
The non-partisan election for Chatham County School Board Districts Three, Four, and Five will be in November with no primary. Candidates have to reside in their district but the entire county votes for all districts. School board members serve four-year terms.
