Subject: Re: Al Cooke’s explanations
I agree with a lot of Al Cooke’s explanations about Chatham Park. The first of two points I want to bring up is that we the public were not made aware of the looming development being planned until early this year. Of course Al would know about it early one because of his profession in county agriculture. I personally had heard about land being bought up in a certain area of Moncure, including people being pressured to sell. But I thought all of that had to do with the industrial building going on down there.
The second of the two points is that the parts about forests being cut down is not exactly right. Stands of trees maybe, but not “forests”. Environmental organizations that defend forests automatically include the wildlife that live there. When a forest is
clear-cut, that puts the wildlife homeless. They have to go somewhere, and very often crowd other forested areas or invade human developments. And we all know the furor that occurs with deer eating our prized flowers and gardens. “They were there first,” essentially. In addition, where the land has been clear-cut, the only growth that occurs is small flora with no fauna. It takes hundreds of years for the trees to grow to full stature in such land as we find between Pittsboro and Jordan Lake. Who knows how many years before wildlife will be able to find homes there.
It’s understandable that both sides of the issue need to genuine listen and pay attention to the opposing views. I personally understand that some development may need to happen. Many of you who live here and have a lot of land have spoken out on their environmental concerns and wanting to preserve what we have. For those who don’t, hopefully you will think twice or more
about clear-cutting and its effects on all wildlife as well as our own environmental health. I personally feel that Preston Developers don’t care about anything other than their money…not Pittsboro, not we citizens, not the forests, not the water, not the wildlife. Only their own consuming greed.

There are a lot of unanswered questions from a lot of concerned citizens of Chatham County.
1. If Al Cook “knew” about all the land being purchases and of “plans” to do mass development, why did he not inform the public?
2. While land records are open to everyone, most of us do not have time to daily review who purchases what.
3. So very many of us do not want “massive developments” of any kind. We have shown this by postings, petitions, and in person.
4. Any pretense by a developer to care about the land, forest, water, wildlife, and quality of life, is just that “pretense”.
5. Further, when elected officials do not fulfill their responsibility, they can be removed; this can be by election or legal action.
6. Was there pressuring of people to sell their land? If so, this is so reprehensible as to void sales.
7. What was paid for the purchase of all this land? We need to know the total amount and amount of individual sales.
8. As for “rights” to own property and do as we will to it- NONE OF US REALLY OWN, WE ARE RENTING FOR OUR BRIEF PERIOD ON EARTH. WE ARE RESPONSIBLE CARING FOR, PRESERVING, PROTECTING, AND LEAVING IT BETTER THAN WE FOUND IT.
9. Our footprints should be soft and caring.
10. And, therefore we must protect and defend the bountiful and beautiful County we have.
