Dr. Dyker’s post of 19 October 2013: “Saying ‘NO’ to development begins with birth control.”
True, if people practiced absolute birth control, there would be no development. Without any practice of birth control, we would all be so poor and near death that there would also probably be no development.
We live in a world where we mostly allow individual rights to determine the level of birth control, and individuals and corporations have the right to develop landscapes. For citizens who presently live in Pittsboro and Chatham County, we also have the right to ensure that new development will not harm us in various ways, including dramatic increases in pollution of our drinking water resources in the Haw River and Jordan Lake.
That’s why so many people are upset by Chatham Park Investors’ present Master Plan. It’s full of holes, and it will harm us. Our efforts are to help the developers and Pittsboro ensure that Chatham Park is properly planned and developed. We are definitely not saying “NO” to development.

I am not sure how birth control affects the Chatham Park development. But, we do not need the increased population that the development will bring.
As for impact on the water and environment, it will detrimentally impact both. Chatham County is short on clean water at present. All recent environmental studies show the bad effects on air, humidity, and wildlife of cutting trees. And, more progressive states and communities are demanding road and parking surfaces be covered with products that allow water to flow through to the under-soil. This flow-through is important to maintain underground water and to prevent drainage of brown/black water into sewer systems and ultimately into streams and rivers.
While we cannot mandate individual birth control, we can prevent influx of large numbers of people to live in huge developments.
