Celebrate Banned Book Week at Your Local Library!
Over the years, books for children, young adults, and adults have been challenged or banned in public and school libraries. You may have heard about “A Catcher in the Rye,” “Lady Chatterly’s Lover,” “Go Ask Alice,” and other classics, but did you know that a book for 3-5 year olds called “A Visit to Cuba” was banned in Miami-Dade County Schools for showing smiling children in a communist country? A children’s picture book called “And Tango Makes Three” was banned because two male penguins who adopted and raised an orphaned penguin smacked of homosexuality? “Captain Underpants” books have been challenged and banned because they are disrespectful of authority?
Think for yourself–read a banned book this week.
