Subject: Sales Tax Collected at Habitat Store but not PTA Thrift?
I think this has been on here before but after being told by a gentleman at the Habitat store that “the PTA was breaking the law by not charging tax” (an employee or volunteer, not sure which), I wanted a clarification. I asked the manager of a PTA store if they paid taxes and they weren’t sure and also had the question of why Habitat collects sales tax. The Habitat guy also told me the PTA Thrift “inflatted their prices to cover not charging tax and that’s why their prices are higher”.
They are both wonderful places to recycle old unwanted things and benefit the community at the same time, but I am assuming they are both non-profit and therefore don’t pay taxes so why does one charge tax and the other doesn’t? And it’s a 7% tax so it adds up to quite a bit of cash at the end of the year. Does that money get paid to the government and if so why if they are a non profit?
Just curious as to why one does and one doesn’t, if anyone has the answer..
