Chatham Hunger Walk Adds Food Trucks to the Festivities!

CORA Food Pantry Seeking Walkers for Year’s Biggest Fundraiser

The 24th Annual Chatham Hunger Walk will take place on Sunday, November 4 starting at Pittsboro Elementary School at 2:30 pm. The walk winds through historic downtown Pittsboro and the First Sunday artisan fair in a one-mile or three-mile course. Participants solicit donations to support CORA Food Pantry. Last year the Walk raised $46,000. The fundraising goal for this year’s Hunger Walk is $50,000.

We had such a large increase in demand in the last year that our stock of food is currently very low, and donations of all kinds have slowed down since the beginning of the summer. From July 2011 through June 2012 CORA served a week’s worth of food to 17,094 individuals — 3000 more people than the year before — and gave out almost 30 more tons of food, an increase of 23% over the previous year. In order to refill our shelves and keep up with the continued increase in demand, we need the community to come together with us at Hunger Walk and raise the money to make that happen.

Any group can walk as a team – school groups, clubs, neighborhoods, work colleagues, church groups, sports teams, or just a group of friends. Single walkers are also welcome. There is no fee to participate in the Walk, but a donation of $20 is suggested to receive a Hunger Walk T-shirt.

If you would like to organize a team for the 2012 Hunger Walk, send email to , or call 919-545-3030 and request a Team Captain Packet of information and team supplies. You can also download Team Captain materials on the CORA web site at www.corafoodpantry.org.

We have some exciting changes this year that will make the whole event more fun and festive for the Walk crowd. Our live music by the Junior Appalachian Musicians will be outside, weather permitting, and we’ll have food trucks at the school so folks can enjoy some good local food before the walk.  Here’s the menu:

Pop’s Diner of Moncure, NC
Menu: Each item $4
Barbecue Sandwich
Burgers       includes “homemade” chili, slaw, home ground beef for burgers
Funnel Cakes; Fried Oreos & Honey Buns
Barney’s Famous Hot Dogs of Pittsboro
Menu:  $.50 – $2.50 price range for items (meal – basic dog, chips, and drink for $3.75)
Variety of dog sizes and types, including sausages
Variety of Chips Chili and cheese chips Moon Pies & Honey Buns

A portion of Food Truck proceeds will go to the Hunger Walk. Registration for the Hunger Walk and food sales begin at the elementary school at 1:30 p.m.

CORA was established in 1989 with the mission to provide emergency food to Chatham County residents who have a need for temporary community support to keep themselves and their families fed. Chatham County families in crisis or hardship may receive food from CORA with a referral from a county social services agency, nonprofit human services agency or church pastor. Eligible families and individuals receive a week’s worth of nutritionally balanced food for each family member. For more information email or visit the website.

Imagine a day – or longer – without food.  Please do what you can to help your neighbors!
