Subject: My final word on Voter ID
As with his recent letters to the editor of the Chatham Recordregarding education, Mr. Graybeal tries once again to fog the issue with meaningless numbers and statistics. Before anyone unconditionally accepts John’sstatements, one should ask: Who documented “(1) that voter impersonation fraud hasoccurred only rarely, in part because, as in NC, it is usually a felony; (2)those who advocate for voter ID laws have not documented significant voterfraud and certainly have never shown that it had any effect on an (3) election.†John Graybeal’s terms of reference are, with one exception, all biased or irrelevant.
Former Republican governor, Charlie Crist, of Florida: Note “FormerRepublican†, who is now partisan supporter of the Democratic Party candidate.
Ohio State, Dan Tokaji: Irrelevant statement regarding changes in proposed Ohio law, not on theprincipal of voter ID.
The Voting Rights Institute of the Democratic National Committee (my emphasis) is a permanentorganization created to monitor developments in election law
Election law expert,Richard Hasen: John Graybeal conveniently ignores Hansen’s blog quote “Crawford, the judge, said the fact that there were also neutral justifications for thelaw, such as preserving election integrity, which justified the law regardlessof partisan motivations†.
Nathaniel Persily of Columbia Law School: The Columbia plan, among other things expands the number of districts ……………….. reflecting thestrong growth of Latinos in the state ………†. Need I say more?
Bob Phillips, head of the NC Chapter of Common Cause, anorganization that promotes campaign-finance reform has named RepresentativePricey Harrison as co-recipient of its 2007 “Plott Hound†award. The annual honor recognizes individuals whodemonstrate courage in strengthening democracy. And who is Pricey Harrison? – AGuilford County, NC Democrat.
Brennan Center for Justice (NYU): The full quote was “The Brennan Center for Justice at New YorkUniversity Law School has found that 25% of adult African-Americans, 15% of adults earning below $35,000annually, and 18% of seniors over sixty-five (my emphasis) do not possessgovernment-issued photo ID’. Irrelevant to theprinciple of Voter ID. The question is how we ensure these citizens can obtainthe necessary ID to prevent fraud.
The Pennsylvania House Majority Leader, Mike Turzai: I findthis man the only credible reference John has made, and this supports mycontention that PA laws are not the way we should implement photo ID in NC.
Adam Cohen of Time Ideas; Time Ideas is a Time magazinepublication, and we know just how “non-partisan†Time is!!!
