Celebrate Hunter S. Thompson’s birthday at Chatham Community Library

In the 1960s, Margaret Harrell was a copy editor at Random House in New York. She met a number of the era’s literary lights, such as “poète maudit† Jan Mensaert and Greenwich Village poet genius Milton Klonsky. However, it was with gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson with whom Harrell forged a long-term relationship. Join us this Wednesday, July 18 at 7 pm at the Chatham Community Library as Margaret reads from and discusses her memoir Keep This Quiet!: My Relationship with Hunter S. Thompson, Milton Klonsky, and Jan Mensaert.

In the spirit of celebration of what would have been Hunter S. Thompson’s 75thbirthday, the library is hosting a Gonzo Birthday Cake Contest the same evening. Entries will be judged by Chef Minter of the CCCC Culinary Arts program. All entries are welcome; however, drugs, alcohol, and tobacco may not be used in the preparation of the cakes.

This program is free and open to the public; reservations are not required. For more information, contact the library at (919) 545-8084.

The Chatham Community Library is located on the campus of Central Carolina Community College, 197 NC Highway 87 N in Pittsboro.
