By no means is this meant to be a solution, especially for the conversation part, but for intermittent use there are web sites that can do some quick translation for you.
http://translate.google.com/ is one of them; my advice on this site is translate to a language, then translate it back to see if it mangles it. I use it occasionally to handle email translations for my job.
There is also the BabbleFish app for smart phones that can listen and translate. Again, do not count on it being 100%.
Human-done translation is best, though.
