Subject: Coyotes – Need Advice
Our property includes several acres on the DUKE Power right of way on 15-501. Our back yard edges on the power line. There was a time when DUKE Power bush hogged/mowed the power line regularly. But the last several years it has not been mowed at all.
It appears that occasionally maybe every 18 months or so they spray something on it that kills all types of vegetation and multiple other things. Due to the over growth of this land we are now seeing a large increase in several different type of unwanted vermin. The snakes coming into our barn and yard have increased, the rat population has also increased, the fox population is increasing, raccoons and a very significant increase in the coyotes. Coyotes are usually loners but for some reason these have formed some type of a pack and are running 3-4 together. The deer population has been multiple kills by them this spring. My biggest concern is that we have 3 horses, a pony, several dogs and cats. I believe that a pack of coyotes could very easily bring down our pony and possibly even kill one of the horses.
Is there any agency in the Chatham County area that can offer a resolution to disposing of these coyotes? We are not against someone shooting them before they cause a serious life threatening injury or even death to our domesticate animals.
If anyone can offer a solution please let me know. Does anyone know how I can get in touch with DUKE Power to request that they mow the power line again. Possibly if the property was mowed and some of the hiding and living spaces taken away they might move on to somewhere else.
Any suggestions or information would be considered helpful to us. Thank you
