Chatham Chatlist #4139   [þ [9/11

This letter is in response to the following letter that was in Chatham Chatlist #4139

Date: Sat, 10 Sep 2011 10:32:22 -0400
From: Dan Marley
Subject: Rocky Rive Sludge

Ms. Myra Dotson:

Read your post about the Rocky River Crayfish and clams, etc – I get it !

We all need to get out of Chatham County right now !! Where are we to go ?

Awaiting instructions.

Dan Marley My response:

Dear Mr. Marley,

With all due respect to you and your response to my letter to Tom Glendinning, your instructions are:   you should spend less time posting letters that are silly, and non-productive towards the
serious problem of our farmlands becoming toxic waste dumps, and more time reading about alternatives and letting your elected officials know your concern about the health of the people and environment.

You stated:  “we all need to get out of Chatham County right now!!  Where are we to go?”  Mr. Marley, there is a stretch of rural road in this state, where sludge has been spread for 30 years, the cancer rate there is over 70% in people under the age of 60.  There are families where each member of the family has a different cancer, and the age range of this family is 17 years old to 51 years old.  There are similar cancer clusters in Chatham and other counties throughout the state.  You asked where you should go. These people are going to their graves.

Keep in mind food is grown in sludge, and drinking water sources, both ground and surface are being affected by run off from sludged fields.

Where do you want to go assuming you do not want to go 6 feet under? There are a few counties in the mountains that do not have sludge spread within their borders.

Please email me if you would like to see maps of NC showing the location of sludge fields or see them on our website.

Yours,

Myra Dotson, Chair
