Hi Phyllis,
You can take them for FREE to the Chatham County’s Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Center the third Saturday from 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM from March through November. It is located at 720 County Landfill Road, Pittsboro, NC 27312.
Other stuff you can take there includes:
Corrosive (examples: oven cleaner, bleach, auto batteries, and other products that can cause skin burns)
Reactive (examples: include chlorine, lye, some laboratory chemicals, and other products that can explode or emit toxic gases)
Toxic (examples: pesticides, herbicides, antifreeze, and other poisonous materials)
Ignitable (examples: gasoline, turpentine, motor oil, and other flammable materials)
household batteries, fluorescent light bulbs & tubes
If you need more information, go to chathamnc.org/Index.aspx?page=526 or call (919) 542-5516
If you go into Chapel Hill, both Weaver Street Market locations have small blue collection containers for household batteries. They are near the cash registers. Just ask someone if you can’t find them.
