Subject: Question about compensation pay for School Board Members

Due to the severe budget deficit Chatham County Schools are faced with and the need to tighten our belts in order to provide our children with the best education possible, I have a question concerning an item on the Board of Education’s agenda for Monday night, February 21.

Does anyone know the present rate of compensation for a BOE member and  the recommendation of compensation that is now being requested by Mr. Logan?  How is this recommendation being requested different from the compensation/procedure that is in place at this time?  Surely Mr. Logan would not be asking for an increase in compensation.

The following is the agenda item as copied from the meeting agenda:

COMPENSATION
Board members will be compensated for the performance of official school business. The amount of compensation will be established according to applicable laws.
• All official meetings of the Board for the purpose of conducting Board of Education business (regular meetings, closed sessions, special called meetings, emergency called meetings, etc.)
• Staff development (conducted by any appropriate organization (NSBA, NCSBA, SBE, DPI, CCS, other LEAs, IHE, etc.)
• Attendance to National, State, and Local conferences and conventions
• Official appointments to other Boards, Committees, Organizations, etc (Board of Directors of the State School Boards Association, Liaison to the County Commissioners, City Council, EDC, CEF, or other educational advocacy
organizations)
• Per diem, subsistence, and mileage for all official business meetings

REIMBURSEMENT
Board members will be reimbursed for out-of-pocket expenses incurred in the performance of their duties.
Requests for reimbursement will be submitted within thirty days of incurring the expenses. Such requests will be signed by the board member incurring the expense. Requests for reimbursement submitted by the chairperson will be signed by the superintendent
