DOES CHATHAM COUNTY NEED A LANDFILL?
As you may or may not be aware, Chatham County is rapidly moving forward with
deciding on a location for a Regional landfill- that’s 500 tons of trash/day! As
a county, we generate less than 50 tons per day. A feasibility study paid for by
the county proposed a 500-ton per day landfill as the minimum needed to be
economically viable. The County feasibility study and other documents can be
found here: http://www.chathamnc.org/Index.aspx?page=1268. A landfill of this
size would have to accept a lot of garbage from the surrounding counties. Think
about seeing a large garbage truck every 10 minutes, the air, and noise
pollution not to mention the contamination of our groundwater. Once a site is
permitted, it is much easier to permit an expansion for an even larger landfill.
We don’t think that Chatham County should be in the TRASH business.
WE DON’T WANT A TOXIC LANDFILL IN CHATHAM COUNTY!
A group of concerned citizens has formed a grassroots organization called
Preserve Chatham County to oppose the landfill and to try to come up with better
options for our county’s waste (increased recycling efforts, waste-to-energy
options, newer waste technologies, etc.). We feel that a landfill of any size
does not fit with the values of Chatham County.
The Chatham County Solid Waste Advisory Committee (SWAC) has identified 9 sites
throughout the county as possible sites for this landfill. On January 5th, they
will likely recommend 3 or 4 sites to the County Commissioners based on the
alternative landfill site evaluation.
Please plan to attend as many landfill related meetings as possible. The
first important meeting is the Wed. January 5, 2011Solid Waste Advisory
Committee meeting to be held at Central Carolina Community College 6:30pm in the
new Community Library.
The County Commissioners will have the final determination as to whether the
county will proceed with permitting and construction of a landfill. In January
and February, a number of public meetings will be held for the public to voice
their concerns. Please contact each of the commissioners prior to the meetings
and attend them if at all possible. We can make a difference!!
