Subject: Shakori Hills GrassRoots Festival to Unveil New Dance Tent
Drive out into the country, past Pittsboro on Henderson Tanyard Road, as you pass a nice horse pasture and just before you start seeing signs that say “festival” with arrows pointing down the drive, something else stands out just beyond those trees. Through the branches of the trees that line the back of the pasture, a large
white and yellow thing emerges. “It looks like a blimp hiding in the woods!” one festival volunteer decrees.
That thing in the woods is the new Dance Tent at the Shakori Hills GrassRoots Festival of Music & Dance. The tent was put up last Saturday by a few strong and determined volunteers, and will make its Shakori Hills debut on Thursday, October 8th when a local band, the Haw River Rounders strikes up their first chord.
The tent was purchased jointly by the Shakori Hills festival and its sister fest, the Fingerlakes GrassRoots Festival in Trumansburg, NY, from a company that mainly makes tents for churches and revivals. This one looks more like one in which you’d see a daring young man on a flying trapeze. The festival-goers will love having more room to
move their feet, as well as the festive feeling it brings to those who see it. Of course, there is already a pretty festive mood going, but the new tent just adds to the wonder!
Some dance tent sets that are bound to please: Holy Ghost Tent Revival (Thurs. at 8:30pm) request a set at the tent and on the Grove Stage, and often vary their sets with the more “danceable” stuff reserved for the crowd there; Locos por Juana (Fri. 10pm) will inspire some great salsa moves; Preston Frank with Donna the Buffalo
(Fri. after midnight) is always a festival favorite; The Belleville Outfit (Sat. 3pm), Austin’s newest swingin-est thing; The Duhks famous “late night set” (Sat, well, Sunday at 1am); and all of the festival’s dance workshops. Expect much more fun as well.
Let the blimp draw you in, put on your dancin’ shoes and stay a while!
