Diane, Try the link below for the American Society of Consulting Arborists. There is a finder function on that page and five members in NC, two in Pittsboro area. Otherwise, call a tree service. Most have training in diagnosis. Fungus on a tree is, usually, a sign of decline or damage. It is not fatal, but just an indication that rot has begun on some exposed or dead wood. Some fungi exist on the outside of trees naturally.
