Friends and neighbors,
A couple of our local citizens made it into the New York Times! (Thanks to Paul Cuadros!)

SILER CITY, N.C. | 3:06 p.m. Karl G. Kachergis said he had waited eight years for this moment, had worked tirelessly for the day when a Democratic candidate could take over the White House. As chairman of the Democratic Party in Chatham County, Mr. Kachergis woke up early in the morning to drive to a remote corner of the county and check on the poll workers scheduled to appear there. It was cold and rainy and visibility was poor. On Airport Road, just 11 miles from Siler City, an elderly woman drove through a stop sign at an intersection and smashed into him.
PITTSBORO, N.C. | 1:37 p.m. Gray telephone wire stretched from one small room to the next here at Chatham County’s Republican headquarters. Volunteers called registered Republicans asking if they have voted, if they need a ride to the polls. One volunteer [Joyce Cotten] makes do by calling from a fax machine. It was not supposed to be that way, but the Republican organization had to improvise.
By the way, reports from this morning are that Karl is doing fine, although still in the hospital.
