Citizens’ College began in 2006 as an opportunity for Chathamites to learn firsthand about county and town governments from the people who actually run these departments. The Jordan Matthews program will continue this format while focusing on local Siler City government. As an outcome of the seven weeks of interactive learning, students will be better informed on the inner working of municipal government, understand where and how dollars are spent and discover how to participate more fully as young citizens.
During visits to Siler City Town Hall, the Police Department, Volunteer Fire Department, Siler City Water Plant, and the new Hospital students will learn how each department works to provide services to the community and discover the roles that citizens play in Town Government. The seven sessions take place Wednesdays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.
Jay Palmer, Civics teacher at Jordan Matthews and Rita K. Spina of Chatham Citizens for Effective Communities (CCEC)-Institute, Inc. will facilitate the program. For inquiries about the program, contact Dr. Spina at 919-932-3132.
