Subject: Introduction to Chatham County Center of North Carolina Cooperative Extension
Recently there was a post to the Chatlist asking about who and what the Chatham County Center of North Carolina Cooperative Extension is. Due to a full schedule is has taken awhile to get a response back to the Chatlist, but this is the story of who and what we are.
We are the Chatham County Campus of North Carolina’s two land grant universities, North Carolina State University and North Carolina A&T State University. We have County Center’s in all 100 of North Carolina’s counties plus the Cherokee Reservation. This makes us the largest outreach arm of any university in North Carolina.
Chatham County Center gives our residents easy access to the resources and expertise of NC State University and NC A&T State University. Through educational programs, publications, and events, Cooperative Extension field faculty deliver unbiased, research-based information to North Carolina citizens.. We can answer your questions on a wide array of topics. We have Extension agents in the following program areas: Phyllis Smith –Family and Consumer Science; Lauren Irby — 4-H and Youth Development; Glenn Woolard (County Extension Director) — Community and Rural Development, Forestry and Administration; Debbie Roos — Sustainable, Organic and Alternative Agricultural Production, Commercial Fruits and Vegetables, and Beekeeping; Al Cooke — Home Horticulture, Commercial Ornamentals, Urban Forestry and Wildlife; Sam Groce — Livestock and Forages, Field Crops, and Farm Business Management; Dan Campeau — Poultry; and Marti Day — Dairy.
It should be noted above that different agents have different assigned areas of educational responsibilities. In our organization one of the hiring considerations is the agent’s level of expertise in the area of assigned responsibilities. Many folks assume that just because they are talking to an Extension Agent that they have expertise in whatever area that they have a question about. Especially in agriculture, the field is so broad that not any one person can have knowledge in all areas of agriculture. Therefore, we have several agricultural agents with expertise in those areas that are important both socially and economically to the citizens of Chatham County.
