Mid-afternoon today, the robbery of a Siler City store led Chatham County sheriff’s deputies to pursue the robbery suspects’ vehicle, which crashed on NC 902 near the Rocky River. One person in the suspect’s vehicle died in the collision and another was quickly apprehended.

According to Capt. Roy Allen, a third suspect was apprehended near Pittsboro and has been taken to the hospital for treatment of potential injuries. “He apparently was able to catch a ride from somewhere near the collision site to the Pittsboro area, but we were able to find him fairly quickly,” said Allen.

Allen said that a deputy was in the Siler City area when the robbery of the store occurred and noticed a vehicle speeding from the area and driving erratically. The deputy pursued the vehicle, which eventually headed east on NC 902.

Other deputies joined the pursuit and reported that the suspect exceeded the speed limit and drove erratically. As the vehicle neared the Rocky River, it collided with a truck. Fortunately, no one in the truck was injured.

When the third suspect had not yet been apprehended, the Sheriff’s Office immediately notified residents within five miles of the area using the reverse 911 calling system. “We are greatly relieved that we were able to notify people of the potential danger, but even more relieved that we were able to get the third suspect in custody fairly quickly,” said Allen.

The names of the suspects, including the crash victim, have not yet been released.
