Subject: Why Are We Feeding Squirrels…..
….if we aren’t going to eat them?
Hi Ahnie Rising…..perhaps you could try mounting a board, etc. above your feeder, large enough so that the squirrels aren’t able to reach the food without stepping on the shutoff?
It appears we’re having pretty good luck with a modification to our tube feeder. I removed all the perches, base and anything the squirrels can sit on. Then I put some plastic wire ties through the former perch holes, which are below the feeder openings.
The birds are able to hold onto the flexible ties and feed, while the ties won’t support a squirrel’s weight. The cost was about 50 cents.
Also found a really cool Niger/Thistle seed tube feeder at Lowes Hdw. The perches are ABOVE the openings, and the finches have to hang upside down to eat. Doesn’t seem to bother them a bit, and I’ve seen no one else able to get anything out. Love it.
