Subject: Options for Chatham seniors to cope with heat wave
The Chatham County Council on Aging offers several programs and suggestions to help local senior citizens cope with heat waves. “We know that extreme temperatures can be a serious health threat to all of our residents, but seniors must be especially careful,” said Angel Dennison, director of the Council on Aging.
For those without air conditioning, the Council participates in a fan donation program that is funded through a statewide program sponsored by utility companies.
“Residents who are at least 61 years can receive an electric box-style fan at no charge. If you know a senior citizen in need of a fan, please contact Kathy Burns at 542-4512. Also, due to having a limited supply of fans, we would appreciate donations of fans or cash to buy fans,” Dennison said.
The Council on Aging invites seniors to enjoy the air conditioning in both the Pittsboro and Siler City senior centers, which are open Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm.
“Generally, group activities and wellness programs are offered in the mornings, while bridge, arts programs, Mah Jongg and quilting groups are offered in the afternoons,” Dennison said, “but scheduled activities vary for each center.”
Dennison said that lunch is served at 11:45 am, but registration is required.
“The exercise room stays open until 5 pm. However, it is important to note that even when no activities are planned, seniors are welcome to stay here to read, watch TV, socialize or play board or card games with others.”
To find out more about scheduled activities, call 542-4512 for Pittsboro activities and 742-3975 for Siler City activities.
“We also want to tell people using the walking path at Central Carolina Community College, which is very close to the senior center in Pittsboro, to come inside to cool off and get a drink of water,” Dennison added.
