Subject: Northwood Varsity Baseball Team advances to the regionals!

Our Northwood Varsity team traveled to Kitty Hawk on Tuesday to take on First Flight in the 4th round of the playoffs and after a long awaited rain delay brought us home yet another win!! They now have advanced to the Eastern Regional playoffs wich will be a best of three series.

Our first game will be Thursday the 24th at Whiteville High School at 7:00pm. The address to the school is 413 North Lee Street, Whiteville NC.

Our second game will be Friday the 25th at Northwood  at 7:00pm so PLEASE come out and cheer these boys on if you can. Our boys have been playing some extraordinary baseball and you can be a part of the action during this exciting time.

If needed, a Saturday game will be announced.

Congratualtions Coach Parks and all our Varsity boys for making it this far, here’s to a state championship!!!

Northwood High School Bands, Ed’s Automotive & Collision, Performance Automotive & Tire and Quick Change Oil & Lube will be hosting the 2nd Annual “Motors for Music†car show on Saturday 28thApril 2012. Join us for a day of live music and classic vehicles! Fun will fill the parking lot of Alpha Install (formerly Pittsboro Chevrolet) located at 697 Hillsboro Street (15-501 North of the courthouse circle) in Pittsboro, NC 27312.

Free admission for spectators — the event starts at 10am and runs through 3pm. Food, drinks, ice cream and t-shirts will be available for purchase. All proceeds will benefit the Northwood High School Band Program.

For anyone interested in showing a car, bike or truck the entry fee is $20 the day of the show. Registration opens at 8am and runs through 9:45. The first 100 vehicles to register will receive a collectors edition “Motors for Music†dash magnet and door prizes will be given away hourly!

Subject: Northwood JV Ladies Soccer Defeats JF Webb

Good morning everyone,

Last night the Northwood JV Girls team traveled to Oxford to take on JF Webb on their home field.  While the Chargers started out a little tentatively, they quickly took over the game keeping the ball at JF Webb’s side of the field for almost the entire first half. 

With a 3 to 0 lead in the first half the JV ladies refused to let off the gas pedal and scored an additional three unanswered goals. 

Great defense on the night by outside backs Heather Hawkins and Kailee Hamilton along with inside sweepers Ellie Frost, Coley Schactman, and Callie Miller allowed only three shots on goal throughout the evening.  Great support by Cali Powell, Anna LaRocco Masi and Maria Reichel kept the team fresh and motivated.  Goals were scored by Tori Nothnagel with the hat trick, and single goals by Amanda Peele, Hannah Coffee, and Erin Nelson.  With their 6-0 win the team remains undefeated with a 5 and 0 record. 

The JV squad takes on the also undefeated powerhouse Cardinal Gibbons Wednesday night at Northwood.

The Northwood “Voices” Chorus, Jazz and Symphonic Bands will hold their annual Holiday concert in the Benjamin J. Lee Auditorium at Northwood High School at 7 p.m. this Thursday, December 8, 2011. Admission is cans or boxes of food which will benefit the CORA Food Pantry.  Last year, the NHS Bandand Chorus was able to donate over 1,000 pounds of food to CORA after thisconcert.  We look forward to seeing you there to celebrate the season with our students.

The American Cancer Society’s Pittsboro Relay for Life Committee would like to invite survivors, caregivers, and relay participants to participate in a promotional video series entitled “Why I Walk.” The goal of this video series is to promote awareness of our local event and the impact it has on our community by sharing the stories of local people. Our goal is to focus on the reason people participate in Relay for Life, whether it is in honor or memory of a family member, or friend, or because they themselves are facing, or have faced, cancer.

If you would be willing to give some of your time, and share your story, we would like to invite you to the Media Center at Northwood High School on Monday, November 21 from 3:15pm to 6pm. We anticipate that each “testimony†will take 20-30 minutes. If we need to stay longer, we will..

Subject: Sensibility vs. HERFF JONES

Have recieved several emails concerning HERFF JONES, their extortion methods,  and the many shades of green gowns floating around Chatham.  Many offers to  donate gowns and many feel the practice of setting up the table in the hall at NW by HERFF JONES sort of pressures kids  to buy or want to buy although many cannot afford. 

The one thing I didn’t hear back on is a taker for the slightly used (worn less than an hour) gown I offered.  Which sort of says to me that we will have few  takers and most will want to spend the 45? dollars on the new gown that they can wear for an hour and then hang in the closet or  donate to the Thrift Store.

I’m going to give this gown to the guidance office at NW and they will know  someone who may need it as graduation nears.  I encourage others to do the same with their old ”shades of many greens” gowns.

And PLEASE check the internet for much cheaper and cooler invitation ideas. 
Also there are cheaper photographers out there for you senior portraits than the company the school uses which forces youto buy packages you just don’t need.  And as always, try to buy local??  Are there any photographers out there or printers who can compete with these mega merchants?

Help out our local schools and link your grocery cards. Everytime you go grocery shopping and use your grocery card a small percentage goes to the school of your choice. It’s a painless way to help out. You don’t even need to have kids in school to do this!

You have to link your Harris Teeter VIC card and Food Lion MVP card every year in order to get donations to the schools. Here is the info I found (If you know of others, please post them.) There are also private schools and day cares, church groups, and other charities – please link your cards to something.

Subject: State Releases ABCs Results for the 2010-2011 School Year

The State Board of Education released results from its ABCs testing and accountability model on Thursday, August 4.

The ABCs of Public Education is the state school improvement program.  It began in the 1996-1997 school year and has three primary goals: 1) strengthen local school accountability; 2) emphasize mastery of basic subjects; and 3) provide as much local decision-making as possible.

State standardized tests judge proficiency on a scale of one to four (I-IV)..  Students must achieve III or IV in order to be considered proficient. The levels of state recognition are:

• Honor School of Excellence = 90-100% of students at/above Level III, making expected/high  
  growth and meeting federal Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP).
• School of Distinction = 80-89% of students at/above Level III, making expected/high growth.
• School of Progress = 60-79% of students at/above Level III, making expected/high growth.
• Priority School = less than 60% of students at/above Level III and achieving expected/high
  growth.

In the 2010-2011 school year, all Chatham County schools achieved growth based on the ABCs model.  All schools achieved expected growth while eight schools also obtained high growth status.  The seven schools that earned School of Distinction status were:  Bennett, Bonlee, Chatham Central High School, Margaret B. Pollard, Northwood High School, Perry Harrison, and Silk Hope.  The nine schools that earned School of Progress status were:  Chatham Middle, Horton, J.S. Waters, Jordan-Matthews High School, Moncure, North Chatham, Pittsboro Elementary, Siler City Elementary, and Virginia Cross Elementary.  It should also be noted that SAGE Academy, the district’s alternative school, is judged on a different model than traditional schools, but achieved expected growth.

“We are excited to report that for the first time in the 14-year history of the North Carolina ABCs of Public Education all of our schools made expected growth or high growth.  This achievement is a credit to the excellent teachers, administrators, and staff who work with our students every day.  It should be noted that this accomplishment has occurred in a climate of state budget cuts and diminishing resources. The Board of Education and administration are committed to providing the highest educational opportunities possible for the students of Chatham County.  Congratulations to staff and students,†said Superintendent Robert Logan.

The federal accountability measure, Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, is different from the North Carolina ABCs program, but uses some of the same testing data in determining AYP status.  As previously reported, five schools met AYP for the 2010-11 school year.
