Chatham County just had its first confirmed case of tomato spotted wilt virus on tomatoes at a farm near Pittsboro. I posted photos on Cooperative Extension’s Growing Small Farms website at http://bit.ly/KvLsCl

Be on the lookout for these symptoms. It’s too soon to tell how much pressure we will face from this disease this year.

Come join the Chatham County Center of North Carolina Cooperative Extension and the Chatham County Beekeepers’ Association for our 6th Annual Pollinator Day Celebration on Saturday, May 12, from 10:00 am til 2:00 pm on the lawn at Chatham Mills in Pittsboro. The purpose of Pollinator Day is to raise public awareness of the importance of the bees and other pollinators that are needed to produce 80 percent of our flowering plants and one third of our food crops.

Great news! Spring is here and this week several of our Chatham County farmers’ markets are opening for the 2012 season!

With several locations and different dates to choose from, now buying from local farmers and vendors is more convenient than ever. Here are the opening dates and I hope to see you there!

Subject: ServSafe Classes

Chatham County Center – NC Cooperative Extension and Chatham County Division of Environment Health will be sponsoring a ServSafe Food Safety course from Wednesday, February 1st to Friday, February 3rd.  Class times are 9:00 am to 5:00 pm daily.  The cost of the course is $100.00 per person.  Classes will be held in the Chatham Community Library located behind Central Carolina Community College off of NC Hwy 87 N.  ServSafe(r) is a 14-hour Food Safety Certification Course developed by the Education Foundation of the National Restaurant Association.  This is a program for all food service managers and supervisory staff in restaurants, hospitals, nursing homes, and other food service establishments.  Certification will be provided by the Educational Foundation of the National Restaurant Association.  A certificate will be awarded to all who successfully complete the course and the written examination.  For any additional information, contact Chatham County Cooperative Extension, 919-542-8202.

Subject: Register now for Natural Beekeeping Workshop on Jan. 28

The Chatham County Center of North Carolina Cooperative Extension will offer a Natural Beekeeping workshop as part of its Enhancing Sustainability Series on Saturday, January 28, 2012 from 10:00 am-4:30 pm in the auditorium of the Agriculture Building in Pittsboro.

This course is intended for beekeepers who want to learn more about how to manage their hives naturally. The national Certified Naturally Grown (CNG) organization recently developed a Natural Beekeeping (Apiculture) Standard. The primary focus of Natural Beekeeping is the health of the honey bees and the sustainability of beekeeping.
