Meg -
As sports parents, I think you and I can appreciate someone who is trying to start up a new sports program. Don’t know much about all the people involved yet, but I would have the tendency to give them a break. If I were to start something new, as an individual parent, I would probably start with my local school and expand from there rather that trying to go county-wide right away. I hope that it is a school sport that we could play on a county-wide basis.

Maybe it should just be about starting Lacrosse in Chatham and not “endowing” any particular schools.
If all the kids come out and interest is there, parents and volunteers and school staff will follow…be it at a new school or at Horton or Silk Hope.

Sally,
I understand what you are saying but the site says “endow the new ne schools with lacrosse”.
That doesn’t say inclusive to me. I don’t read where it says it’s open to everyone.
I would certainly have the opinion, just from it’s name that it’s for those in and of that area and who plan to attend the new ne schools.

My niece is a Southern girl, raised in Raleigh, and plays Lacrosse for Broughton High School. She is by no means a star on the team, but she absolutely loves it. I mean LOVES it. She had never played growing up, but really took to it.
There are quite a few schools in Wake County that offer this sport for young women. And even more offer it for young men in Wake and Durham counties.

Again, I know the game. I know it’s history. I think it’s a great sport, when it is inclusive.
I think it’s great to start a Lacrosse league. It’s how soccer got started in Chatham.
But to only include the TWO NEW NORTHEAST schools in it’s efforts is wrong. Period.
If it’s a “location” thing, then aren’t Northwood and Horton considered part of the Northeast anymore?

I got a chuckle out of the reference to lacrosse as being an sport that is “exclusive” and for “white, upper class boys.” Obviously from someone without a clue about the sport.
I grew up in Syracuse, NY, a city bordered by the Onondaga Indian reservation. Lacrosse is actually the “french-ification” of a stickball game called dehuntshigwa’es in Onondaga. More can be learned at Wikipedia, if you are interested in learning the history of lacrosse.

And we’ve always said the new high school in the NE would be, (thanks to the location the former BOE/Superintendent chose) 90% white. So I guess Howards post shows how this program would fit perfectly there. One of the best players I’ve ever see was African Amercian, played for UVA (I think), his name was Christmas. No one could catch him. So, if you keep Lacrosse at the predominantly white schools (it flourishes in the private, prep school community) I guess you can keep it being the “white boys football”.
