      Our family in need now has nice cozy house to call home . They have no rent due until January and have moved in   They will need some help with the light bill and groceries but considering they were homeless a week or so ago you all did good . Thanks to all the supporters, volunteers and participants in our special February events. And thanks to Piedmont Health Services and the Moncure and Siler City Community Clinics for their sponsorship. Hats off, too, to the Council on Aging staff for their creativity, positive energy and commitment in providing the We Love Seniors Month special events.

Subject: Falls and falls prevention

My thoughts are with Mr. Sharpe and his family and friends. May the music play on.

I am not privy to the details of his accident but I am saddened by it.

Falls are the number one accidental cause of death among older adults.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “falls are the leading cause of injury deaths among adults age 65 and older. One in three adults age 65 and older falls each year.  It is estimated that approximately 17 percent of older North Carolinians experienced a fall in the past three months, with one-third of those falls resulting in an injury.”

The Arc of Chatham, in collaboration, with the Chatham County Council on Aging, invites community members to a holiday gathering at the Eastern Chatham Senior Center in Pittsboro. Please come Tuesday, December 2 from 6:00-7:30 pm. This will be a potluck style event. Everyone in invited to bring favorite finger foods or goodies.

We are expecting a visit from a favorite wintertime celebrity! So bring family and friends of all ages to join the fun!

THANKS!!!! For the food donated to the Senior Center. Several up you in Chatlist-land stepped up and made generous donations. We appreciate your support!

For those of you who are focused on what to do in weather-related emergencies, both Council on Aging Senior Centers are emergency shelters. We operate in cooperation with the Emergency Operations Center, and will provide shelter primarily for high-risk and special (health) needs people and secondarily for the general population. If you have emergency needs during weather-related disasters, please call 911. Our shelters will open when the EOC determines that they are the best options for the community.

Subject: Begging for food for food pantry

A BIG thanks to the folks who donated food to the food pantry at the Pittsboro senior center!

Fortunately, you each brought several bags of food and we honestly appreciate the donations.

Unfortunately for seniors in need of food, there were only three of you.

So, I’m begging for food so others don’t have to. One can at a time, we need to restock this food pantry. I’ve forgotten how many people receive Gene’s Chatlist, but if only half of you contribute one can of meat or beans or fruit, we can feed a lot of people.

Cool spot

Well after last weeks post I had 22 emails offering help. I replied to them one by one and accepted what was offered or passed things up I couldn’t use. I waited on things to arrive that didn’t  and out of that 3 people actually showed up here to help as they promised. Two more helped me get some relief by phone.

It has come to my attention that Beltone Hearing Aids has been publishing the addresses of the Chatham County Senior Centers in Pittsboro and Siler City in national directories as “Beltone Hearing Care Centers.” This is a misrepresentation.

The intent of the Council on Aging was to offer professional hearing
screenings to older adults, not to function as retail hearing aid sites nor
to engage in commerce.

Beltone will no longer be utilizing the Chatham Senior Centers.

Subject: Portal of entry for services for older adults in Chatham County -

You may not need this information today, but one day, you will. The only thing that we ALL have in common is that we get a day older every day.

Everyone has stories about older adults who cannot afford their medication, older neighbors with  no one to care for them, adults with disabilities who have difficulty moving around in their homes or who have no access to appropriate transportation. Or, the stories of people who were sold a great-sounding “no fee” insurance product that will not pay for the care they need. Sound like someone you know?
