Subject: It’s Derby time!

It’s almost Derby time!  The Kentucky Derby is this upcoming Saturday, May 7th, and the place to watch the race is the Heads Up! Kentucky Derby Party at Briar Chapel clubhouse. 

The party starts at 3:00 and you can look forward to great food, live music, a cash bar (with mint juleps, of course!), race coverage on big screen TV’s, a silent auction with over 65 items, a hat contest, and a fun game to pick which horse will win. 

Jack Maverick and His Wild Rebels will provide the music and if you haven’t heard them then you for sure want to attend because they are great!!  They perform energetic renditions from some of country music’s greatest pickers, coupled with the soothing steel guitar sounds of Hawaii- very unique, indeed. 

 The hat contest is sure to be extra creative this year since we have all recently gotten inspiration from the parade of hats at the Royal Wedding. 

Tickets to the event are $25 and can be purchased in advance or at the door.  All proceeds benefit the work of Heads Up! Therapeutic Riding Program.

I want to add to those individuals who have sent in praise about Heads Up! Therapeutic Riding Program.  My daughter rides at Heads Up and has also volunteered as a side walker.  It is a great program that is beneficial for so many folks, children and adults alike.  I have been amazed at the increase in self confidence, coordination, and posture since she has been riding.  We are so fortunate to have this program in Chatham County!

You can support the program by attending the annual Kentucky Derby Party May 7th  at Briar Chapel Clubhouse.  Great food, great music, great silent auction items, great cause.and then there is the Derby to watch which is much more fun with a group than sitting at home!

7. DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP: A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A SMALL TOWN

Documentary photography is about using images to tell stories. This is a 2-day documentary photography course about learning to find the extraordinary in the ordinary.

 In this course we will work to develop your photographers eye.  What are the elements that make a photograph interesting? How can you use light and shadow and composition more confidently to make your images tell a more powerful story?  How do you take photographs of strangers? We will spend the first part of the course looking at and discussing some iconic documentary images and talking about those elements, as well as  practical topics such as the finding and photographing of documentary subjects.

 This course will help you find new and interesting ways to photograph things that interest you, but will also help you gain the skills and confidence to photograph people, including strangers, with grace and humanity.

For this course, we will explore the town of Pittsboro.  We will fan out with shooting assignments meant to challenge you and encourage new perspectives in an effort to paint a picture of the landscape and the people of this small and historical town. We will spend class time reviewing the images and will go out into the field again. Please bring a bagged lunch.

*Film photographers are welcome to take this class, with the understanding that they will need to get their film developed into contact sheets or prints in the week between each class.

This class is designed to help you unlock your minds potential to express who you are regardless of your preferred medium.  By examining the ideas behind our work and why we make it we can take a journey of exploration that epitomizes what it means to be an artist, a creator, a maker of objects rather than a painter, sculptor or photographer
alone.

This class is part seminar, part critique and part studio course. Some work will be done outside of class.  By looking at the work of conceptual and interdisciplinary artists, by talking to peers with backgrounds from other disciplines and by challenging your ideas of what art is and what you are capable of you will find in this course new sources of inspiration to expand your current work and generate
new work.

Saturday’s 9th Annual ClydeFEST was an absolute success in every definition of the word! Based on unofficial counts, the turnout hovered around 1000 children, parents, and grandparents who enjoyed the authentic, homemade, county fair whimsy of ClydeFEST.  More importantly, the day made innumerable unforgettable happy memories for hundreds of citizens of Chatham County and beyond. There’s no better measure of success than that.

The Chatham County Arts Council is deeply and sincerely grateful for the generous gifts of time, boundless energy, and tremendous creativity from Clyde Jones and the residents in the Village of Bynum. Mediterranean fare and hot auction items heat up Chatham Together fundraiser Jan. 24

Shake off the winter doldrums and head for the Mediterranean at Chatham County Together’s winter celebration, which this year has something for everyone. Set for Jan. 24 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Briar Chapel Club House off U.S. 15-501 in north Chatham, “Tapas of the Mediterranean” offers an evening of small plates prepared with fresh, locally produced food donated
by volunteers and local eateries including Angelina’s Kitchen in Pittsboro, and  Crook’s Corner, Mediterranean Deli and Mariakakis Fine Food and Wines in Chapel Hill.

In addition to a silent auction of many arts and crafts items and other goodies, the evening culminates in live bidding for several premier donations, including coveted basketball tickets (UNC vs. Florida State), sports memorabilia (a basketball autographed by the Heels and Coach Roy), and, for the younger set, an autographed photo of Miley Cyrus (who rose to mega stardom as Hannah Montana).

Chatham Together volunteer Cheryl Gallan asked her Wilmington friend Jackie Burch, a casting director for Cyrus’ upcoming movie ,”The Last Song,” to secure a signed photo of the teen singer, songwriter, actress and heart-throb.  The highest bidder can make some lucky youngster very happy.
 
All proceeds will benefit Chatham County Together.  After 20 years of serving the county’s neediest youth and families through mentoring, tutoring and other services, Chatham County Together is facing its worst budget crisis ever, thanks to the economic downtown and shrinking federal, state and foundation budgets. They need your help more than ever.
