Subject: Road Signs

Maybe it’s not so much that people don’t agree with your point of view, but more an issue that road side signs are an eyesore.

Travelling down 15/501 from North Chatham to Pittsboro, we are assailed with signs for karate shops, pro and con political messages, houses for sale, Legend Oaks, Briar Chapel, those running for political offices and on and on.  Then when the mowers come through, the signs are swept into the blades and shredded, thus adding more garbage to the already littered highways.

I’m curious.  I assume we have a “right” to post signage on our own property, but do we also have “rights” to do so on public land?

CHEF CHALLENGE TO RETURN FOR SECOND YEAR

On Leap Day, Chef Colin Bedford gazed at a table full of ingredients ranging from canned cling peaches and whole grain pasta, to local sweet potatoes and fresh spinach in efforts to plan a delicious, healthy meal. He was not designing a menu for his Chatham County restaurant, The Fearrington House, but a new lunch menu for the more than 8000 youth of Chatham County Public Schools.

The Abundance Foundation’s annual Chatham Chef Challenge brings high-profile chefs into schools to help create healthier school lunches in Chatham County Schools. The purpose of the Chef Challenge is to increase consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables by students in grades pre K-12 while supporting GAP-certified local farms when possible. This project also works toward the Abundance Foundation’s mission of bringing greater education and access to local food to all families.

This year, the Chef Challenge consists of 4 Chefs: Chef Colin Bedford of Fearrington, Chef Jay Pierce of Lucky 32, Chef Gregg Hamm of CCCC Natural Chef program, and the cafeteria managers of some schools.

In partnership with the Chatham County Schools, Briar Chapel, Debbie McKenzie of the Southeast United Dairy Association, a team of committed community members and CCCC’s Natural Chef Program, Chatham County School lunches are going through transformation.  In addition, the marketing classes at Chatham Central High will be working on promotional materials as part of their classwork and supervised by teacher, Lynda Byrke.

Each chef or team is assigned a box of ingredients to create their recipe for a healthier school lunch. The menus designed by the chefs must be easy for the school cafeteria lunch teams to create and abide by the USDA requirements for the school lunch program. Each chef partners with cafeteria managers, cafeteria staff, teachers and principals to bring greater awareness to each school this spring. The 4 recipes are cooked by the staff and served to the students in all 17 Chatham County Public Schools on the Chef Challenge Days, which are April 19, April 26, May 3, and May 10th. Cafeteria Managers and Cafeteria Staff are extremely generous for volunteering their time to learn the new recipes designed by each of the 4 Chefs. The organization of Chatham Chef Challenge could not be done without the help of the dedicated team of superstar volunteers.

On Chef Challenge Days, over 8000 students have the opportunity to try the new lunch created by a superstar Chef with fresh and local ingredients. The students then take a survey to assess the Chef’s lunch. The recipes liked most by students permanently stay in rotation on the County’s school lunch menu.

I saw the post on Friday from Chatham County Together about their March 11 Tapas and Tunes. I can’t wait for the event and I’ve already bought several raffle tickets. I like the new twist this year that raffle tickets can be bought online and you don’t have to attend the event to win the prizes.

I had a incredible meal there a few years ago but, since I’m not a member, bidding on a gift certificate like this is my only way to get back.

Subject: It’s Derby time!

It’s almost Derby time!  The Kentucky Derby is this upcoming Saturday, May 7th, and the place to watch the race is the Heads Up! Kentucky Derby Party at Briar Chapel clubhouse. 

The party starts at 3:00 and you can look forward to great food, live music, a cash bar (with mint juleps, of course!), race coverage on big screen TV’s, a silent auction with over 65 items, a hat contest, and a fun game to pick which horse will win. 

Jack Maverick and His Wild Rebels will provide the music and if you haven’t heard them then you for sure want to attend because they are great!!  They perform energetic renditions from some of country music’s greatest pickers, coupled with the soothing steel guitar sounds of Hawaii- very unique, indeed. 

 The hat contest is sure to be extra creative this year since we have all recently gotten inspiration from the parade of hats at the Royal Wedding. 

Tickets to the event are $25 and can be purchased in advance or at the door.  All proceeds benefit the work of Heads Up! Therapeutic Riding Program.

I want to add to those individuals who have sent in praise about Heads Up! Therapeutic Riding Program.  My daughter rides at Heads Up and has also volunteered as a side walker.  It is a great program that is beneficial for so many folks, children and adults alike.  I have been amazed at the increase in self confidence, coordination, and posture since she has been riding.  We are so fortunate to have this program in Chatham County!

You can support the program by attending the annual Kentucky Derby Party May 7th  at Briar Chapel Clubhouse.  Great food, great music, great silent auction items, great cause.and then there is the Derby to watch which is much more fun with a group than sitting at home!
