Complaining to the management is only useful if the management is concerned about keeping customers

Subject: complaining

I have been reading and learning from fellow chatlisters of good and bad experiences with local businesses. There seems to be a trend here. The local automotive service and sales companies seem to want our business. Many have spoken up for and against several local businesses that provide vital transportation and service to the local community. I have myself mentioned an unfortunate and inconvenient brush with one of the companies in the area (much to my chagrin).

Subject: Congratulations to Lyle Estill on his doctorate degree

Sarah -

I was surprised, but happy to see in the Fearrington event post by you that apparently Dr. Lyle Estill has
earned a doctorate.

I’m sorry many of us missed this blessed event.

Would you (or anyone else) know when and where did Lyle earn his doctoral degree? And in what field?

I am sure his family and friends are so proud of him. I know that it took a lot of hard work, lots of time and effort. Some have likened getting a doctorate to a cross-country marathon.

Small town blues

Subject: Small town blues

Both the delight and the curse of living in this area is the narrow choices for products and services. The delight is in the personal touch that comes with the knowledge that the people who run those businesses with which we use for convenience and necessity really care about their customers and are not in it solely for the money. The people who run the shops and other businesses in PBO and outlying towns are, after all, here for the same reason. We all moved here or stayed here instead of the big towns with all the amenities and choices.

Volunteering is a gratifying experience

Subject: volunteering

VolunteerThank you Meg for the suggestion. I do, in fact, volunteer a great deal in the summer time and it does indeed help with the long summer. I find that my good works performed in the summer usually bear fruit in the fall (and then the long cold winter with sick children). Many of my past summer projects have evolved into successful summer programs for children. Certainly my past work with the thrift shop, while hot as the hinges of heck, gave me many hours of mindless bliss. I also recommend to all the joy of volunteering for those agencies which rely upon volunteers. We all have to live so we can’t give all our time but  an hour here and there can build a house for a family, or provide support for a rider with balance issues, or give an elder the chance to talk, or teach a child to read (many, many, many hours for that one).

Double good service

Subject: Double good service

I wanted to share two good experiences.

The first was a wonderfully therapeutic and uplifting haircut I received from Kristy Church at Salon Blue. I have discovered I prefer her style and friendliness and will always wait for her to tame my mane. I also enjoy waiting in the lobby of Salon Blue. There is a cool virtual fish tank, magazines full of beautiful people and usually a few beautiful people sitting and waiting as well. Well done Kristy and Salon Blue. You lifted my spirits.

Opera Dan

Subject: Opera Dan

Actually, I have done some opera and have a great appreciation for the full figured woman. If you know me then you know what I mean. Sometimes those skinny women are wound up so tight they can’t enjoy life. There are other perks as well (which modesty prohibits me from elucidating).

I am a prima donna. Love me or leave me (I’m used to it).

I am out of the dog owning business after this one

Subject: Re: Unmanageable and dangerous dogs

Kit, thank you for your response. I have considered the danger of these dogs and will seriously consider your suggestions. They are sound and the best advice I have received from anyone regarding this problem. I have children of my own and would be very disturbed if a biting dog was anywhere near them. In fact, I did have a dangerous stray threaten my children on my property. I took care of that myself.

I am in the same situation with one of my children. He is disabled and as a result has difficulty with the current method of education at his school. I am a teacher and so well versed in the laws that protect individuals with disabilities (not to mention having a child with a disability).
