Subject: We Love Seniors events

Thanks to all the supporters, volunteers and participants in our special February events. And thanks to Piedmont Health Services and the Moncure and Siler City Community Clinics for their sponsorship. Hats off, too, to the Council on Aging staff for their creativity, positive energy and commitment in providing the We Love Seniors Month special events.

More than 125 people visited the 13th Annual Healthy Heart Day event in Siler City!

About 100 people joined us for the 21st Annual Chocolate Cake, Cheesecake Too, Bake Off in Pittsboro. 43 cakes were auctioned off and we raised almost $3,500.

We sold $500 in cakes, candies and cookies at the bake sale in Siler City.

80 tickets for the AARP hot dog supper in Pittsboro were sold and many who attended took advantage of trying out the Nintendo Wii games and fitness programs.

We had a productive meeting in Pittsboro, with six Chatham service providers presenting information on programs to improve access to health care and chronic disease management.

Subject: Pecan processing

Here’s what I learned about places that process in-shell pecans:

Some pecan processers don’t answer email.  It is their busy season.

You possibly shouldn’t make any processing decisions based on  who does or does not list shelling on that site; apparently, the Goldsboro processers DO shell for the public at a rate of 35/50/85 cents per pound in-shell nuts, cracked, blown and cleaned, respectively.  Other processers appear to be in the same range; some give a price break at the 500# level.

Pecans yield roughly one pound of meat for two pounds of in-shell nuts, so even at 85 cents you’re way ahead of the local grocery store prices.

Given that part of my life is in Goldsboro, I’ll probably take my 2008/9 nuts there, whenever my trees decide to let go of this year’s harvest.  At least half the crop is still in the trees.

Subject: Protect the haw from weedwhackers

Please don’t throw your weed whacker in the haw. It could hurt the water that we drink and would mess up my kayaking experiences.

I suggest you keep looking for a small engine repair shop. They can be hard to find, mainly because repair costs can be higher than purchasing a new more efficient model. I recommend a four cycle engine for any yard clean up. They are more efficient, put out less pollutants and are much easier to start for many months beyond the first summer. Plus they have more power. Take that old Husk and dump it in the metal bin at the recycling center. Some scrap guy will pull it out and fix it maybe or just junk it for metal. Please be responsible with old engines and metal. The river is no place for that kind of debris.

Hope you get your whacker fixed.

Subject: Liars

Pam, PBO chevrolet told me (after considerable asking) that their Prius’ were 22,000. Sounds like the toyota place has a good deal. Hope you get one. They sure are quiet.

I bought a suzuki at PBO ford. It is a good car but I had to go through the same bunk there as well. I just liked the car so much and didn’t want to look anymore (I hate shopping).

Good luck with your search. Stick with the ones who are honest from the beginning.
