In February, the Chatham County Arts Council (“ChathamArts”) Sustainable Cinema Series honors Black History Month by showing two powerful films. Mark your calendars for this special SUNDAY Event, Feb. 26th, 2 pm, Fearrington Village Barn, Hwy 15-501 midway between Chapel Hill & Pittsboro

“THE LOVING STORY” by director & producer Nancy Buirski; Producer & Editor Elisabeth Haviland James (documentary feature) about “Loving v. Virginia”, a watershed civil rights case in which the United States Supreme Court declared Virginia’s anti-miscegenation statute unconstitutional in 1967.

A racially charged criminal trial and a heartrending love story converge in this documentary about the Lovings, an interracial couple who fell in love and married at a tumultuous social and political time in American history, yet nevertheless brought about change where previously no one else could.  Through stunning archival footage of the Lovings, the film revisits this public battle through the eyes of a private couple who simply wanted to have the right to get married and live in the place they called home.

“The Loving Story” is produced by Nancy Buirski’s production company Augusta Films, LLC, in association with HBO Documentaries. The film was made possible in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Buirski is the Founder and was the Director of the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival. Producer/Editor Elisabeth Haviland James is based in Durham, NC, where her company, Thornapple Films, is headquartered. Additional local crew members include: Cinematographers Rex Miller and Steve Milligan; Sound: Mark Barroso. Co-producers Nancy Buirski and Elizabeth Haviland James will be in attendance for Q&A if possible.

“The Loving Story” screening is sponsored by The Southern Documentary Fund, an organization that encourages documentary media projects made within or about the American South. Through services like fiscal sponsorship, SDF aims to connect people, ideas, and resources — furthering their goal of growing a community of documentary artists.

“Wolf Call”  Raleigh Director Rob Underhill’s 12-minute
narrative transports us back to 1956 when William Bradford Huie of “Look”
magazine talks with the two men acquitted in the boy’s murder, Roy Bryant
Jr. and J.W. Milam. The previous year, 14-year old Emmett Till from Chicago
had gone missing in Money, Mississippi. Later, the boy’s mutilated body was
found in a river. This historic drama became a lightning rod for moral
outrage and pivotal in inspiring a generation of young people to work for
social change in the 1950s. “Wolf Call”  is the Winner of seven festival
awards, four nominations, dozens of official selections
and recently nominated for Outstanding Independent Short Film by the Black
Reel Awards. Director Rob Underhill, Actor Mike Wiley and
Cinematographer Aravind Ragupathi in attendance for Q&A.

Director Rob Underhill has written, directed, and produced dozens of short
films, numerous music videos, and several feature films.  WOLF CALL
stars Mike Wiley (a Chatham County resident) in multiple roles. Wiley is
the winner of Best Actor awards in 2009 & 2010 for his performance in
‘Empty Space,’ including Best Actor at the 25th Black International Cinema
Berlin. He is the 2010 Lehman Brady Visiting Joint Chair Professor in
Documentary Studies and American Studies at Duke University and the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In addition to his numerous
school and community performances, he has also appeared on Discovery
Channel, The Learning Channel and National Geographic Channel.

Subject: Cinderella’s Closet Needs Storage Space

In its second year, Cinderella’s Closet is a Chatham County project which provides the experience of a lifetime and formal wear to girls that could not otherwise attend prom.  We are partnering again this year with a similar project in Chapel Hill sponsored by Christ Church.

More information and requests will be forthcoming, but we are in need of a climate controlled storage facility for the dresses and accessories that we acquire.  If you can donate the use of such a facility, or can gather monies from friends and neighbors to support this event which was such a success last year, please contact me.

Patti,
There’s a great Zumba class held at the Duke Center for Living on Wednesday evenings at 5:30pm. We have a lot of fun and get a great workout at the same time. You can call the Duke Center for Living and get a pass to try the class, or see if they allow drop ins.  I have also heard that there’s a place in the same complex as the Chatham Marketplace that is holding Zumba classes. Might try both and see what you think.

Subject: Walmart Coming To Chatham County on 15-501 near Orange County line

Chapel Hill Town Manager Roger Stancil says that “plans for a new Walmart had been filed with Chatham County, right over the line, which I think would make it very convenient for people to leave Chapel Hill, shop in Chatham County and then come back and live here.”
 
Orange County economic development director Steve Brantley says the average Walmart generates about $70 million in retail sales.
 
“The significant property tax and retail sales tax from that Walmart will be supported, probably in large part, by Orange County shoppers,” Brantley says.
 
The Walmart currently in Hillsborough pays $200,000 in county property taxes each year, and produces about 10 percent of Orange County’s annual sales tax revenue.

In paying homage to Luke, Jon would signal his family sitting in the stands (Section 5) by holding up his hand with all 5 fingers outstretched. He did this at the end of the third quarter. Gradually, the rest of his team started to do the same. Within a couple of games, players from both teams, the fans in the stands, and those watching the games on television, would begin the final quarter by raising their hands with all 5 fingers outstretched in honor of Luke’s memory.

The final quarter became known as Luke’s Quarter, the 5th Quarter, and this humble signal crystallized the entire team. And, although having lost their starting quarterback, starting running back, and starting defensive end to injuries at the beginning of the season, Wake Forest went on to complete their most successful season in school history, winning 11 games against 2 losses. Coach Grobe was selected the ACC’s Coach-Of-The-Year, and Jon performed brilliantly in the ACC Championship Game with fifteen solo tackles against powerhouse Georgia Tech.

The Abbate family founded The Luke Abbate 5th Quarter Foundation for the purposes of educating young people nationwide to the dangers and life-altering consequences of irresponsible driving.

A hearty *thank you* to the staff at Fearrington Village for a very successful & fun Pumpkin Fest on Sunday, October 30th.

It was amazing to see so many folks who came out on a chilly day to enjoy food, music, costumes, and of course the intricately carved pumpkins. This event has grown over the past few years, thanks to a supportive community and the employees of Fearrington Village.

I can’t wait for next years’ Halloween extravaganza.

Subject: Thanks for decorations!

We were happy to move into our place in time to have a few years of the pumpkins on Chicken Bridge before they built the new bridge and tore down the old one in the 80′s.  It is fun to see at least a few still put up there each year. 

Now we love venturing to the home on Hawfields Drive for their wonderful Halloween decorations each year and take friends with us.  We really look forward to seeing what new theme has been cooked up and this year we enjoyed the French horrors (with head coming out of a toilet, “wine” going down a skeleton’s throat and the blood and gore all over)!  I think my favorite though was the State Fair put on a few years back.  We really appreciate the time, energy and creativity it takes. 

Also, thanks to the folks who put up the interestingly cut pumpkins at Oak Hill Rd. and Mann’s Chapel Rd.  The ship one was amazing as were the really intricate ones (which we couldn’t figure out)!

We missed not having the bleacher ones on River Road though.  Maybe next year?

Didn’t make it to Bynum Bridge this year.  Was it as spectacular as usual?
