Subject: Northwood Varsity Baseball Team advances to the regionals!

Our Northwood Varsity team traveled to Kitty Hawk on Tuesday to take on First Flight in the 4th round of the playoffs and after a long awaited rain delay brought us home yet another win!! They now have advanced to the Eastern Regional playoffs wich will be a best of three series.

Our first game will be Thursday the 24th at Whiteville High School at 7:00pm. The address to the school is 413 North Lee Street, Whiteville NC.

Our second game will be Friday the 25th at Northwood  at 7:00pm so PLEASE come out and cheer these boys on if you can. Our boys have been playing some extraordinary baseball and you can be a part of the action during this exciting time.

If needed, a Saturday game will be announced.

Congratualtions Coach Parks and all our Varsity boys for making it this far, here’s to a state championship!!!

Subject: Northwood Ladies V Soccer Senior Night Defeats JM – Playoff Games
 start Wednesday May 9 at 7:00 pm

Here’s a recap from Friday’s game.

 ”The Northwood women’s varsity soccer team wrapped up their regular season with a bang Friday night against a visiting Jordan-Matthew’s team.  With Northwood celebrating their Senior Night, the Chargers came out ready to play.  After firing shot after shot on the JM keeper, the Lady Chargers finally got on the board with a beautiful goal from Jamie Palermo about 15 minutes into the game.  Several minutes later, Hannah Lawrence capitalized on a chance to make the score 2-0.  Just minutes later, Hailey Pister was able to give the Lady Chargers a 3-0 lead on a ball she slotted to the back post.  Northwood would take that lead into the half.  The teams went back and forth for the first 20 minutes of the second half with Northwood controlling much of the play.  The Seniors then took the game over with goals from April Gibbs and Silva Stout, giving Northwood a 5-0 lead, which would hold for a final score.

The Northwood Senior class includes April Gibbs, Yancey Luft, Hannah Lawrence, Silva Stout, Katie McGrath and Rebecca Moore.  These ladies have committed four years to the Northwood soccer program and have been extremely passionate and devoted in doing so.  Thank you, ladies!

Northwood finished their regular season with a 13-4-2 record (10-3-2 conference) and a second place in the Carolina 12 Conference.  This earns Northwood a trip back to the state playoff, where they will host Bunn High School Wednesday, May 9th with a 7p.m. kickoff.”

Subject: Chatham County Parks and Rec Upcoming Events

First and foremost, we would like to thank everyone who came out to our Special Needs Family Fun Day this Saturday.  We appreciate those that came out with their families to celebrate this very special first annual event with Parks and Rec.  We hope everyone enjoyed it as much as we did and hope that we will be able to provide activities for this population in the future.  Thanks again!

Just a reminder of a few events coming up this month at Chatham County Parks and Recreation:

Spaces are still available for our Summer Day Camp at Northwest Park (located at 2413 Woody Store Road in the Silk Hope area).  The fee for camp is $50.00 per week.  Camp dates are June 25-August 10, with no camp the week of July 4.  Camp runs daily from 7:30am-5:30pm.  Please e-mail me at courtney.goldston@chathamnc.org or visit the Parks and Rec website and click on the “Youth Camps” section for a registration form.  Spaces are going fast, so sign your child up for camp today!

Swim lesson registration will be held at Chatham County Parks and Recreation on Tuesday, May 8 from 11am to 2 pm and on Wednesday, May 16 from 3pm to 6pm.  Swim lessons will be held at Pittsboro Swim Association located at 125 Camp Street in Pittsboro.  The fee is $45.00.  If you have any questions, please contact Niki Ash at 336-854-8884 or e-mail at niki.ash@greensboro-pmg.com or contact me at the Parks and Rec office.  Your child must be at least three years of
age to participate.

We are also still taking registration for Whimsy Paint courses.  The next session will be on Saturday, May 19 at the Parks and Rec building located at 90 East Street next to Hardees in Pittsboro. No experience is necessary and supplies are provided.  For youth (ages 8-15), class is from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm and the cost is $20.00.  The theme for youth in the month of May is Peace Sign.  For adults (ages 16 and up), class is from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm and the cost is $25.00.  The theme for the adult class this month is The Strong Woman.  Please register by Tuesday, May 15 if you are interested.  To register, please contact Courtney Goldston at 919-545-8551 or e-mail courtney.goldston@chathamnc.org.  For more detailed information, please contact the instructor, Kimberly Tyson at 919-777-4326.

Chatham County 4-H  Department will host Adventure Camp and  is now taking enrollment until Friday, June 1.  This camp is open to all children ages 6-12 and 4-H membership is not required.  The camp runs from June 11-15 from 8:30 am until 4:30pm and will be held at Northwest District Park located at 2413 Woody Store Road in the Silk Hope area.  The cost for this camp is $75.00 per person per week and includes snacks, crafts and insurance.  All fees are non-refundable. Campers must provide a bag lunch each day except for Fridays (pizza will be purchased for the campers).  Enrollment is limited to 65 campers per week, so register your child now!  If you have any questions, please call the Chatham County Cooperative Extension at 919-542-8202.  For a copy of the enrollment form, please forward your e-mail or mailing address to courtney.goldston@chathamnc.org.

The Chatham County Sheriff’s Department will be running its G.R.E.A.T. Summer Camp from June 18-22 at Northwest District Park.  This camp is for children ages 12-15 (7th-10th grade).  Please contact your school resource officer for more details.

Subject: Calling all baseball fans

Our very own Northwood Varsity Baseball Team is co-conference champions of our Carolina 12 Conference with South Granvillle.  Congratulations NW players and coaches!!!!   With that said, we get to play on Monday May 7th at the DAP (old Durham Bulls baseball park).  We are playing for the #1 seed in our bracket of the playoffs which starts on Friday May 11th. The first playoff game will be at Northwood no matter what.

Our team needs a big turnout of fans this Monday at the DAP. If you love to watch baseball and would like to support our Northwood players please try to come out and see the boys play.  They love having their fans cheer them on.

The cost will be $6 to get in.

Subject: Northwood Ladies V Soccer Updates – Ladies Defeated South Granville  and Granville Central

Good morning Ladies and Gentlemen.  Happy Thursday!

Here’s a recap from Monday’s game (I forgot) and the game last night.

“The week has proven to be a good one so far for the Northwood woman’s varsity soccer team.  On Monday they played South Granville in a grudge match after the two teams tied 0-0 in their last meeting.  Northwood controlled much of the game and took a first half lead when Katie McGrath gave Northwood a 1-0 lead.  McGrath, on great individual effort, dribbled past several South Granville defenders before she put the goal away. Northwood would take their 1-0 lead into the half.  The second half began the way the first half ended, with the Lady Chargers dominating play. Their effort and pressure payed off when Hannah Lawrence took the ball from the South Granville defense and slotted a goal near post to beat the
keeper.  Northwood wasn’t done though.  Ally DeJong, again on great individual effort, dribbled herself out of trouble and hit a well-placed shot from distance, giving Northwood a 3-0 lead.  The Lady Chargers finished the game with strong defense and ball possession and were able to hold on to win 3-0.

Wednesday night the Lady Chargers visited Granville Central in another conference match.  The Lady Chargers came out of the gates lazy, but soon turned up the pressure and intensity.  Ten minutes into the half, Hailey Pister got Northwood on the board.  Two goals by Courtney Lineman soon followed, as well as goals from Laura Shachtman and Ally DeJong.  Northwood would take their 5-0 lead into the half.  Making a few adjustments and changes, the Lady Chargers came out in the second half and continued to control play, which resulted in goals from Rebecca Moore, Kathryn Lloyd, Yancey Luft and Silva Stout.  With little pressure on the Northwood defense, they were able to finish the game with a 9-0 win.

The Lady Chargers will conclude their season Friday night with a home game against Jordan Matthews.  Kickoff is scheduled for 6p.m., with Northwood’s Senior Night ceremony immediately prior to kickoff.”

Subject: Northwood V Defeats Granville Central

 The Northwood varsity women’s soccer team got back into action Monday evening when they faced Granville Central. 

 It took the Lady Chargers a little while to find their groove in their first game since March 28th, but a goal by Gaby Mehringer got the ball rolling for Northwood and they never looked back.  Goals by Ally DeJong, another by Mehringer and individual goals by Courtney Lineman and April Gibbs highlighted a half which Northwood dominated offensively and defensively.  With the score 7-0, Northwood let off the gas pedal and controlled the rest of the game with excellent ball movement and spacing.  The shutout was held in tact with great defense and goalkeeping from Lara Linden and Jamie Palermo.

Northwood’s next game is Wednesday night, with the varsity kickoff scheduled for 6:45p.m., against Cedar Ridge High School”

Subject: Northwood JV Ladies Soccer Defeats JF Webb

Good morning everyone,

Last night the Northwood JV Girls team traveled to Oxford to take on JF Webb on their home field.  While the Chargers started out a little tentatively, they quickly took over the game keeping the ball at JF Webb’s side of the field for almost the entire first half. 

With a 3 to 0 lead in the first half the JV ladies refused to let off the gas pedal and scored an additional three unanswered goals. 

Great defense on the night by outside backs Heather Hawkins and Kailee Hamilton along with inside sweepers Ellie Frost, Coley Schactman, and Callie Miller allowed only three shots on goal throughout the evening.  Great support by Cali Powell, Anna LaRocco Masi and Maria Reichel kept the team fresh and motivated.  Goals were scored by Tori Nothnagel with the hat trick, and single goals by Amanda Peele, Hannah Coffee, and Erin Nelson.  With their 6-0 win the team remains undefeated with a 5 and 0 record. 

The JV squad takes on the also undefeated powerhouse Cardinal Gibbons Wednesday night at Northwood.
