*RALEIGH, N.C. (July 15, 2010)* – The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission
voted on July  7 to take to statewide public hearings 23 proposed changes to
the state’s hunting, trapping and fishing regulations for the 2011-2012
seasons.

Adding five streams to the public trout waters program and removing hunting
and trapping restrictions at Cowan’s Ford Waterfowl Refuge in Lincoln,
Mecklenburg and Gaston counties are among the regulation changes. The public
can provide comments online beginning in early August and at any of the nine
public hearings in September.

Chatham Chamber of Commerce Annual Golf Tournament Winners

The Chatham Chamber of Commerce held its’ 22nd Annual Golf Tournament  at the Tradition Golf Club at Chapel Ridge, “A Fred Couples Golf Course” on Monday, June 21.  There were 68 golfers that came out to play in the tournament.  Prizes were awarded to the top 3 teams and to 3 contest winners.  The winners were:

Chatham County Parks and Recreation Summer Camp at Northwest Park in Silk Hope.

Please read the following carefully as it pertains to camp for the Silk Hope and JS Waters sites.
This year we will only be offering a summer camp at our Silk Hope location.=
Camp is limited to the first 75 campers to sign up.  We will offer a bus p=
ick up and drop off for those signing up at JS Waters.  We will need a mini=
mum of 10 campers to sign up each week who would like to utilize the bus op=
tion. If the minimum of 10 is not met, we will not use the bus, but they wi=
ll still have a spot at camp.  Camp will consist of 6 weeks starting June 2=
8th and ending the week of August 9th.   Camp hours are from 7:30-5:30.  Ea=
rly drop off will start at 7:30 and late pick up will be until 5:30.  This =
applies for both on site at NW Park and for the bus pick up/drop off.  We w=
ill not have camp the week of July 5th.   The cost of camp is $25-$35 per w=
eek and is non-refundable.  Registration will open on April 19th at 10:00 a=

YMCA Healthy Kids Day is a free,fun-filled day of activities designed to promote healthy kids and families in spirit, mind and body.  Join Woods Charter and the YMCA as they celebrate
making fitness fun, and introduce kids to an array of YMCA and community programs designed to provide children with tools that teach healthy behaviors.  This event will feature informational booths from many community health and family advocacy agencies, as well as a giant inflatable side and obstacle course, hula hoops, line dancing, carnival games, paddle boats, face painting, balloon animals, crafts and much more.

Subject: Saturday >> Clean up the Haw!

This Saturday on March 20th, teams of volunteers will be cleaning up trash along the banks of the Haw River, on the islands, and around access areas like bridges.  Bynum Front Porch will be supporting the effort with our own team.  Come join us and you’ll be helping the river and it’s watershed by getting trash cleaned up that’s hazardous

to water quality and river life..

The Haw River Assembly’s (HRA) office is right here in Bynum and we are delighted to partner with them on this event.  We’ll be meeting at the Hwy 15-501 at Haw River parking area right at the bridge and dam from 10AM until 1pm.  The Haw River Assembly will supply the bags and tally sheets to record the kinds of trash found.  (We’ll get

our entry into the “Weird Trash Award” for the most unusual find of the day!) Local businesses make contributions to sponsor the Clean-up, the proceeds are used to support our clean water  and school education programs. HRA asks all volunteers to sign the “Assumption of Risk” form that our team leader will provide.

Be prepared:

Wear rugged clothes, and shoes that can get muddy or wet.

Use work gloves (HRA will supply some, or bring your favorites).

Bring a snack or bag lunch and water.

TRASH CLEAN-UP TIPS
Safety first:  Always wear puncture proof gloves to pick up broken glass and sharp or rusted metal. Be very careful if there is traffic nearby (wear an orange safety vest provided). Make sure all children are safe and closely supervised.

Large Items: if possible drag appliances and other large items up to the roadside.  If too heavy, note on your tally sheet what you found and we’ll try to arrange removal later.

Recycling:  Many cans and bottles near or in the river are too dirty to recycle and must be trashed –use your own judgment.  Excessive dirt can foul up the glass and metal recycling equipment.

Trash Habitats: Sometimes trash that has been in the woods or river a LONG time has become a habitat for an animal or insect colony, and you may decide it’s better to just leave it alone.

Subject: Seagulls on Jordan Lake

At least one reason the gulls come is to feed on the Threadfin Shad. These little fish can’t survive cold water, and can be seen just below the surface, obviously in trouble, or already dead. The gulls don’t have to work very hard to have a feast. The water temperature has been very low for quite a while this winter, and business must be good. A look at Wikepedia will fill you in on these fish.
