Hi Bob,

Welcome to Pittsboro.

I am sorry that a few unconscious people on the Chatlist have made you uncomfortable about your choice to move here.

I moved here 20 years ago alone, and I have never felt so embraced by a community. We are a warm and welcoming, creative and eclectic group!

People that have written these hurtful and negative posts on the chatlist are not bad people…. I think that they are a just folks that are unaware of any other way to vent the pain in their lives. Unfortunately the way they choose to vent it is ineffective.

When you put someone on the defensive, their ears close down and they can’t hear you. When are we all going to understand that!

If we go into negotiations over things with well being for all as our goal, we won’t have to raise our blood pressure or our voices to be heard.

You’ll find more people in Chatham County on that path then most places that I have been. They just don’t bother responding to the unskilled communicators on the Chatlist that dilute their message with any attacks.
Hope you find that you love it here as I do. A team of wild horses couldn’t drag me away ……

I read with interest the comments on bottle water and just wanted to say that it’s not Chatham Co. well water it is all well water.
 
My father-in-love was the most healthy person I knew.  I once heard his doctor tell him (who was also a good friend and golfing buddy) that he had the body of a thirty year old.  I’m telling you this because the one and only time I every saw him not well was when he had a kidney stone.  My in-loves moved from Durham City out to Durham County and also to well water and with in no time was so bad off and in pain that my mother-in-love called us to come help her.  It turned out to be a kidney stone and his doctor gave him a prescription to take care of the problem, which it did.  He never had another kidney stone.  I think that drinking bottle water is a better idea, all we need in life is another pill to take.
 
I feel for those who have had a kidney stone because I know it must have been very painful, because that was the only time I watch my father-in-love crawling on the floor.

Subject: Major disaster – General Store Closing

The General Store has been part of my and my family’s life for so many years! Just the Saturday before they closed, we had a wonderful meal, promising each other to try each others orders next time around.  I had commented on how superior the all the components of my Mediterranean platter had been.

Best wishes to the Vances.  I hope you know (I’m sure you’ve heard!) how much you and your staff and the ambiance has meant to us diehard fans all through the time you’ve tried so hard to meet the various needs of the customers and friends.  I had to laugh – with a wince – at the phrase in the News and Observer that quoted someone as calling it “that communist place.”  In the sense of “community,” it certainly has been.

Re: Walmart versus so-called liberals. Cheap shot, Joe. I don’t imagine the typical Walmart customer worries much about whether his vegetables or plastic toys or electronic giggaws are liberal or conservative. Pig farms ain’t liberal or conservative either but you wouldn’t want one to land in your back yard.

One main fact that’s come out about Walmart along with a fairly continuous stream of scurrilous revelations is that the CEO earns 700 times more than his average worker – for those without a pencil and paper that comes to $5075 per hour. This beats even Wall Street in executive compensation disparities and Walmart is selling large quantities of what you can get at Family Dollar or Little General (my favorites for el-cheapo stuff) without the traffic.

Like at a pig farm, I occasionally hold my nose and go shopping at Walmart in Siler City. Still a liberal though (or maybe a progressive). Most Americans shop cheap because they’re broke or near to it and when you’re feeding the kids on under $20,000 a year you go for the short sales and to hell with the long term or the large ethical considerations. Too bad. That’s just the way it is.

Oh yeah, we can do without that Walmart up on 15-501. Siler City is just fine from the view of this Pittsboro Social Security only pensioner. If you’re worried about the five or six bucks in gas it takes to trot over there you might want to drive the other way on Hwy. 64 and to 14-mile s to Hwy. 55 for a little  excursion to Apex and around Beaver Creek Commons. This is the juggernaught Walmart portends and it’s aimed at the heart of Chatham County.

The main thing is that those folks are living with that concrete and glass monster of congestion and consumption because of decisions made years ago by a County Commission that definitely didn’t care about much more than the dollars coming into the county. Certainly the best interests of it’s citizens didn’t have anything to do with it.

Regarding “real names” on the Chatlist and my posts:

The reason any of you have a problem with me choosing to hide behind an alias is that you suddenly don’t have a person to attack or retaliate in real life against anymore. 

Logic does not allow one to get away with attacking the person instead of the points being made; it’s called an “ad hominem” argument and it holds zero weight.  I’ll commit one (even if only weakly) right now, in fact: perhaps the reason that you people attack my lack of identity is because you have no substantial thoughts in your head that counter me in a way that other people might actually find reasonable.

I also believe that the Walmart debate is now wearing out and should be taken to the BBS, as so many other contentious topics are.  If the counterpoints to a somewhat logical post are logical fallacies and “nasty rant rants” then the topic is probably toast.  I am busy enough that I have a hard enough time skimming some of these emails as it is, without having to sift through the digital equivalent of a three year old throwing a tantrum.

If you prefer to assign a specific gender to my posts, I suppose “she” would do nicely.  “It” would be much, much funnier, though…especially to those of us who have enjoyed (or perhaps had nightmares from) the Stephen King film of the same name.  One final note on the topic of “real names:” unless everyone faxes their driver license to Gene, who is to stop me from writing emails as the fictional (but perhaps realistic-sounding) character “Peter Tong Alfredo?”  How do we know for sure that you’re using YOUR real name?  Do you think that if you post your address just to prove it, someone will drive by and say hello to check?  No.  Of course not.  Names (and in fact, YOU) are simply not that important.  What you say is all that is important, and that’s why I prefer to write something of substance and with some real thought behind it, even if it’s a “rant.”  I’m sometimes playing the devil’s advocate, too; I don’t always support my own arguments here, I just want to force you people to REALLY think about everything from all angles.

Thank you for your post concerning the good and not so good.  I have to say that the other day I made my first post on the Chatham Chatlist and gave my opinion, and only an opinion, concerning the development of the Wal-Mart on 15/501.  To my amazement I read the following day the defensiveness toward the Wal-Mart.  It is better to express an opinion rather than go on the defense about a topic.  To those who are in favor of the Wal-Mart, so be it, and to those who do not wish to shop there, so be it, too.

I no longer live in Chatham County, and I enjoy coming to Pittsboro and to Chapel Hill and Carrboro, I am a senior citizen living on very little income, and I enjoy supporting our local vendors.

Subject: Tapa cloth – Meg Miller

I remember seeing tapa cloth when visiting the Cook islands and Samoa, back  many years ago while I was living in New Zealand. I wanted to buy some for  display, but my then-wife didn’t want to, so guess what?

It’s beautiful cloth, made from the bark of certain trees native to the islands of the South & Central Pacific. I recall asking a Cook islander,  while on a visit to Rarotonga, how the heck you could make cloth from tree bark.  He answered nicely – didn’t bark at me – but I don’t remember the procedure  other than it involved a lot of hammering. I wish I had bought some.
