With regard to that guy selling childrens’  books up around hwy 87, he stopped at our house on Tuesday. He seemed ok to me. He had a hand drawn map of the area and when I told him none of my neighbors had young children he asked about the more outlying area. He did not seem to be up to anything more than finding some parents of young ones. A tough way to make a dollar I’d say..

We had a book salesman come here, too, yesterday.  It wasn’t a Poncho, but he had Texas tags.  I called the non-emergency sheriff line because it seemed suspicious.  We are very rural, too (and not too far from the previous poster.)  I suggested he go into town in order to sell more books, and he was pretty evasive.

I later looked it up online, and it is Southwestern Book Company.  The salesman are legitimate, but the sales tactics are shady at best.

I know that I am late in chiming in on this subject, but I’ve been out of town. My most favorite posts on Chatham Chatlist are those from N. A. Booko. They are always a breath of fresh air. Whether sad, funny, or slightly grumpy, N.A.’s perspective makes me see the world around me with new eyes and new appreciation. Whether writing about rocks that look like sweet potatoes or soap that looks like Miss Piggy, N. A. Booko makes me think, laugh, and, sometimes, shed a tear.

To me, that is vastly more important than vitriolic political rants or petty grievances.

Subject: Looking for company

I recently became a member of the Triangle Freethought Society, and have discovered one other Pittsboro member among the group, who meet monthly in Raleigh.  Both of us were wondering if there might be other like-minded folks out there among our Chatham friends, who might like to join us.  

It would be nice to start a satellite group locally, as well as have others to car pool with to the various Society events, which take place all over the Triangle.  They’re a diverse group of people, old and young, families, singles and couples, all dedicated to the mission: “To provide a supportive community in the Triangle area that mobilizes for the respect of nontheists, promotes critical thinking, and defends the separation of church and state.”  Check out their website for more information: http://trianglefreethoughtsociety.org

Another group I’ve recently been taking part in is the Ethical Humanist Society of the Triangle, which meets weekly on Sundays in Chapel Hill.  Their mission statement is: “The EHST is a humanistic congregational community promoting the cultivation of ethical values founded on reason and science and inspired by the love of humanity.”

Perhaps some of you out there might be interested in accompanying me to one of those meetings.

I’m very much enjoying getting to know all these wonderful people, but wish there were more Chathamites among us. Get in touch if you’re interested.

Subject: A Group Out For Fun

Wow, it’s great to see so many of you getting passionate out there. Seems like (at least to one growing up in the 50′s and 60′s) there is way too much lethargy of community and national spirit. Just keep it ‘civil unrest’ and not nastirest.

I moved back up here after being in Woodstock, GA for several years. I really miss my senior friends there who did things like festivals, played cards once a week, went to lots of different venues when they wanted to be with these friends. Major Lothar (Lot) August Hugo Voller, 71, of Pittsboro, North Carolina died in his home on May 13th. Lot was born on January 23, 1941 in Frankfort, Germany to Herta Katharina Ziefer Voller and Moritz Adolf Voller. He was raised in Germany and immigrated to the United States in 1954 where he attended  St. Anne’s Academy<http://stannesacademyftsmithar.blogspot.com/>in Fort Smith, Arkansas and graduated as the class salutatorian in 1959. He later graduated from the University of California Berkley <http://berkeley.edu/> in 1963 and subsequently earned a Master’s Degree from the University of North Dakota in Economics.

He joined the United States Air Force <http://www.airforce.com/> through R.O.T.C. as a Second Lieutenant in 1963 and served actively until 1969. Lot received numerous commendations including two oak leaf clusters <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oak_leaf_cluster>for flying 44 live combat missions on KC-135′s in Vietnam. He served for a total twenty years in the Air National Guard and the U.S.A.F. Reserves, where he was the liaison officer for the United Air Force Academy. He retired with the final rank of Major.

In 1969, he began his career at Inland Steel Company as an industrial engineer and retired as the head of that  department in 1990. He is past President of the  Institute of Industrial Engineers <http://www.iienet2.org/Default.aspx>(I.I.E.), a global non-profit serving industrial engineering and lean six-sigma management. He was also involved with the domestic and international steel industry where he finished his career with Trade Arbed.

In 1995, he and his son, Randolph Voller, co-founded Voller Realty & Construction, Ltd, which brokered properties and designed and developed real estate. The firm developed both Daniel Ridge in North Chatham County and Chatham Forest in Pittsboro. Lot was very proud to witness the subsequent economic growth in Pittsboro, which resulted in part from the development of Chatham Forest. He was married forty-seven years to his former wife, Viktoria Danning Voller. He is also survived by a sister Ursula Voller Alban and a brother Eddie Short.

Lot lived to the fullest the class motto from St. Anne’s Academy which was “not merely to exist, but to amount to something in life.”

Good Morning Chatham County Friends,

I am so appreciative that Dr. Dykers has taken the time to welcome me to the Chatlist and catch me up on Siler City a bit.

He and his wife, I now realize, were actually neighbors, and after thinking and thinking about it, I realized with his help that they were many of the good folks who I had the pleasure of knowing while I lived in Siler City.  I did speak with my family there yesterday and that helped a lot knowing where he lived and who he is.  A nice, kind man, a wonderful doctor and a good neighbor.  Thank you John for the wonderful welcome.  I look forward to hearing and learning how much the area has grown and perhaps making contact with some more old friends.

There was a post 9 on Wed. Feb. 22 Chatham matters saying:  “You neglect to point out that the Clinton administration radically changed regulations for the CRA, for HUD, FHA and for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac….”

And I sent a post with info from a New York Times op ed:“As the country’s greatest modern champion of deregulation, perhaps Ronald Reagan contributed more to today’s unstable business climate than any other American…” which did not get in the chatlist.

In all fairness , Gene, you jumped on my recent post and put that out in public, and I think my info here should be posted on chatlist rather than leave me looking like a false fact- putter.

Hi,

I lived in Siler City for quite some time, my younger girls finished middle school and high school in Siler City.  I went through a divorce and moved the the western part of the state.  I came across the list somehow online and subscribed.  Just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy reading most of the posts, I agree about the politics, there are enough of that in the media.  

But Siler City did not have a Farmer’s Market when I lived there, Pittsboro was just starting to come back from a lil sleepy town.  We come that way once or twice a year, I still have family in Siler City and friends as well.   Thank you for opening this us to everyone, even former folks from Chatham.  It’s nice to read things about home.
