Words & Music of the Piedmont ~ Susan Ketchin & Marjorie Hudson
Friday, May 25, 7 – 9pm
The Joyful Jewel in Downtown Pittsboro

Marjorie Hudson’s stories in Accidental Birds of the Carolinas evoke life in fictional towns reminiscent of Bynum, Pittsboro, and Fearrington Village. Hudson and Singer/Songwriter Susan Ketchin, author of
The Christ-Haunted Landscape and a forthcoming memoir of music, have taken
life in the South and Hudson’s stories as inspiration and created a
reading-with-songs performance that weaves music into narrative and
narrative into music. Hudson says she surprised herself by writing a song
about Roger the three-legged dog. Susan will perform original music inspired
by images in ‘Accidental Birds’ and the natural music of the southern
landscape around us.

Memoir is the intimate art, and this class will create a community of
stories, and move toward completing a piece, whether for publication or
family records.

Workshop: Fiction Craft: Beginnings and Endings

Date: Saturday, Aug. 25, 2012

Time: 9:30 am – 4:30 pm
You’re working on a fiction story, but it’s not quite there. What absolutely
must be in the first paragraphs? What must be in your ending? And how in the
world do you decide? There are so many options, there’s so much to say in a
few words. The delicate balancing act of beginnings and endings is one of
the most powerful tools in the fiction writer’s toolbelt. We’ll explore how
master writers do it, and try some exercises to refine your own work. Bring
a draft you are working on.

This Third Friday, in honor of the Milo Holt Festival, we will be doing a country/western theme. I would love to have some square dancers for a demonstration/exhibition. I grew up watching square dancing with my Dad so this always brings back the best memories of my childhood and I would love for others to see how much fun this can be.

If anyone or any group out there is interested, please let me know ASAP so I can plan on the space and time needed. We are open 3 hours that night and can work around if you want to come for one demo or stay and do them thru out the night.

Come show the world how much fun they are missing and help me remember good times with my Dad.

*Squier Red & The Blues Band at the Bynum General Store Friday Night
*
Friday night at the Bynum General Store is the place to be from now until the end of August. Many thanks to *Mipso Trio* for helping us kickstart the Bynum Front Porch Friday Night Music Series last week. This week, *Squier Red & The Blues Band* brings their brand of the blues to the outdoor stage. As always, there will be food vendors on hand to supply a tasty treat and a cool beverage.

Next up. . . *The Zinc Kings* (May 18th) will be bringing their Piedmont blues to Bynum.

The Friday Night Music Series runs from May 4 through the end of August from 7 pm to 9 pm every Friday night. Although tickets aren’t required, we pass the hat and encourage a $5 to $7 donation to compensate the performers. To check out the rest of the amazing bands playing this season, please visit our website at www.bynumfrontporch.org. Also, find Bynum Front Porch on Facebook and follow us on Twitter. And visit our sponsors Auto Pro and Hope Crossing Animal Hospital to thank them for their support!

One more thing. . . from now until June 16th, each Friday night we’ll be selling $5 raffle tickets for a chance to win a Schwinn Aerostar 20″ kid’s bike and a Performance Girls Raven 24″ kid’s bike.

Speaking of June 16th. . . .

Bynum Front Porch is planning a summer fundraising auction with a newly added twist-this time we’re including “estate sale” items. The auction will be Saturday June 16th from 10 am to 1 pm. Many thanks to Ben Farrell from Custom Benefit Auctions (www.custombenefitauctions.com) who will onceagain be our auctioneer. The auction will be held at the store so mark your calendars.
If you would like to donate an item for the auction, we welcome you to contact us. Your contribution will help make the event more fun and exciting. We are accepting various items: gift certificates from local businesses, artists’ work, baked goods, vacation vouchers, and any item that has been gently used-from tools to timepieces, furniture to figurines, paintings to pitchforks, cars to chairs. Contact John or Debbie at * bynumfrontporch@gmail.com*.

I suggest modeling The Chatlist after a normal session of British Parliament where questions are asked of Ministers and everyone gets yelled at ,but always with a certain level of decorum . In other words the most egregious of insults must be couched in a layer of high etiquette.

Something like the following. ” Were the Right Honorable Lady to exercise her gifts of observation she might discover that her judgments regarding the staff at Food Lion have been off the mark at best, and tainted with lunacy and delusion at worst. I dare say while the cost of product at Harris Teeter rises above the rest, the excellence of the “Gratis Snacks” scattered about the store far exceeds those of other retail grocery establishments. I charge The Right Honorable Lady to fully address the following question. Where else might one obtain a sugar cookie without the pressure of completing a purchase? With the greatest admiration and respect for The Right Honorable Lady’s ability to discern truth from fiction, I find that her tale contains facts equal in veracity to the stories I read each night to my children about the adventures of Winnie The Pooh !”.. Whereupon people could then write in their responses to The Chatlist and type in Upper Case, “FOUL!”, “SHAME!” , “NOT TRUE!” or “HERE HERE !”..

Roost re-opens for the 2012 season on Friday, April 13th with music from The Boys from Carolina!

Set in the middle of the Village Center in a landscaped courtyard, Roost offers a beautiful and tranquil place to share a drink and conversation, and often features live music on the front porch. So find a table under large oak trees or by the water fountain and enjoy a special time with friends and family! Roost also offers a selection of draft beers, wines by the glass selected by Fearrington sommelier Max Kast, bottled ales and water, and nibbles like salted Virginia peanuts.

We proudly serve beers made by outstanding local breweries, including Carolina Brewery, the Chapel Hill brewery that has drawn international attention for its handcrafted beers, and Fullsteam Brewery, an exciting newcomer based in Durham.

Roost is open spring, summer & fall.
Thursday-Saturday, 4pm-8pm
(919) 542-1239
Live music Fridays and Saturdays, 5-8pm.
