Last month, Wake-Up Wednesday celebrated 4 years of connecting people, businesses, services and community. Turnout has been robust and since the meeting continues to draw newcomers, it’s a valuable networking opportunity for people who’ve attended before.

Networking begins at 8am, the program runs from 8:30-9:30 am. Admission is $5 and includes a fresh breakfast by The Carolina Brewery’s Hop Shop as well as the opportunity to connect with other people doing business of all types in Chatham County. Carl Theodore, from NeuroConnections is scheduled to be the featured speaker.

Special Needs Family Fun Day at Northwest Park on May 5

Chatham County Parks and Recreation is proud to announce our First Annual Special Needs Family Fun Day for those in our community with special needs.  This event will be held on this weekend on Saturday, May 5 from 10am – 1pm at our Northwest Park location at 2413 Woody Store Road in the Silk Hope area.  Activities will include archery, paddle boats, fishing, field games, arts and crafts, basketball and more.  Please contact Rocco Richard at 919-545-8553 or e-mail rocco.richard@chathamnc.org to sign your family up or to volunteer.  Space is limited to the first 25 families, so call now.

Chatham County Sheriff’s Department will be running its G.R.E.A.T. Summer Camp from June 18-22

Subject: Georgeann Eubanks to speak at Chatham Community Library

Author Georgeann Eubanks will present a program on her latest book, “Literary Trails of the North Carolina Piedmont,” Thursday, May 3 at 7 pm. The presentation will take participants on a tour of sites associated with or explored by authors including Doris Betts, Lee Smith, Reynolds Price, O. Henry, Zora Neale Hurston, Maya Angelou, and more. Copies of the book will be available for purchase.
 
A very brief meeting of the Friends of the Chatham Community Library to elect new officers will precede the program; all members of the Friends (and those who would like to join) are encouraged to attend.

Chatham Community Library is celebrating Kentucky Derby Day and mothers during the month of May, and we’re preparing a display of hats for the occasion. We are looking for loans of unusual, vintage, or particularly fancy ladies’ hats that will be exhibited in a locked display case in our lobby throughout the month.

Food Drive for CORA at Chatham Community Library

Subject: Food Drive for CORA at Chatham Community Library

Throughout the month of May, Chatham Community Library will be collecting food for CORA. Nearly 50% of the food distributed by CORA comes from donations. Non-perishable foods are welcome; however, these items are especially needed: soups, canned vegetables, “light” canned fruits, canned salmon, canned beans, baking mix, and cereal.

All items should be in their original, unopened packaging. We cannot accept any foods that are past their expiration dates.

Donations are welcome during library hours: Monday through Thursday, 9-8; Friday 9-6; Saturday 9-5

ChathamArts presents “Semper Fi: Always Faithful”at Fearrington Barn on May 7

Marine Corp Sgt. Jerry Ensminger was a devoted Marine for nearly 25 years. As a drill instructor he lived and breathed the “Corps” indoctrinating thousands of new recruits with its motto Semper Fidelis or “Always Faithful.”

When Jerry’s nine-year old daughter Janey died of a rare type of leukemia, his world collapsed. As a grief-stricken father, he struggled for years to make sense of what happened. His search for answers led to the shocking discovery of a Marine Corps cover-up of one of the largest water contamination incidents in U.S. history.

Spaces are still available for Chatham County Parks and Recreation’s Summer Day Camp at Northwest Park.  This camp will be running daily from 7:30am to 5:30 pm from June 25 through August 10, with no camp the week of July 4.  Northwest Park is located at 2413 Woody Store Road in the Silk Hope area.  The cost is $50.00 per week.

2012 4-H Adventure Camp at Northwest Park

Subject: 2012 4-H Adventure Camp at Northwest Park

4-H Adventure Camp is now taking enrollment until Friday, June 1.  This camp is open to all children ages 6-12 and 4-H membership is not required.  The camp runs from June 11-15 from 8:30 am until 4:30pm and will be held at Northwest District Park located at 2413 Woody Store Road in the Silk Hope area.  The cost for this camp is $75.00 per person per week and includes snacks, crafts and insurance.  All fees are non-refundable.  Campers must provide a bag lunch each day except for Fridays (pizza will be purchased for the campers).
