My experience with the General Store over the years has been almost exclusively with fund raising functions for local charities and non-profits in Pittsboro.  They have brought thousands to these services over the years. This service to the community alone places the General Store above all others in my book.

Subject: It’s not just the General Store!

Yes, the service at the General Store is still very inconsistent but it is the same at the City Tap and the Carolina Brewery.

These eateries hire “food runners” instead of training waiters. They lack training and many of them are kids with bad attitudes who expect big tips even if you just buy a beer. Between the high prices and the poor service, I sometimes go to Cary and Chapel Hill where the service standard is much higher and the prices are pretty much the same. The service and prices in Pittsboro have taught to enjoy dining at home.

Subject: FREE LUNCH!!!!!!

That’s right free lunch every Thursday at St. Bartholomew’s from noon to 1pm. This is a community lunch and all are welcome! I’ve been volunteering for some time now and I just love seeing people of all ages and all walks of life coming together and sharing and eating! Karen Ladd had a vision and it has grown!  It is really important in these times that our community comes together to take care of their own. And this community has certainly  stepped up to the plate (literally!!)Almost all our food is donated so you never know what’s cooking but it’s guaranteed to be good with Karen and Micky Hester at the wheel! We have countless gardeners and home cooks who have donated cabbages, beans, cakes, and casseroles. Harry Horton come and plays the piano. Larry Williams makes sure we have sharp knives and all the help we need in the kitchen. Thanks to all the community volunteers who chop,slice,dice,bake,boil,

Kudos to The General Store Cafe and The Jesus Singer for a wonderful brunch time on Sunday.  To The General Store Cafe for the healthy, delicious food which nourished our bodies and to The Jesus Singer for the inspirational music which fed our soul.  Hopefully you will have many repeat performances.

Subject: General Store Complaint Department on the Chatlist

Thanks Henry for making your observation about the loyalty of a number of patrons of the GSC.  I am a patron of the General Store and I love their food.

That aside, I also have a number of customer service issues arise over my years of patronage.  I have attempted to find resolution to my unease through contact with Vance and Joyce directly, over the phone and through email.  My multiple attempts at contact went unanswered and my problems with GSC unresolved.  Despite being ignored I have returned, again and again.

Subject: The “truth” about the General Store Cafe

My wife and I have been to the General Store on many occasions.  The objective fact of the matter is that they are extremely inconsistent.  You can have an awesome dining experience on one visit, and then a terrible one on the next visit and then an awesome experience on the following visit again. There is no pattern that I can discern, and  I think this partially accounts for why you see such divergent opinions and reviews.

The recent General Store Cafe complaint is really sad.  There are two sides to the story and I’d like to know the restaurant’s side.  We ate there for Valentine’s Day and had an extremely good meal.  The petty complaints that come out on the chatlist drive me crazy. No nerve to handle a situation when it is happening.  A Walter Mitty are we?  I am glad you won’t be eating there again-they don’t need your type.
