Subject: trifoliate orange

I concur with Al and Sam that trifoliate orange is an invasive plant in Chatham County. This species (Poncirus trifoliata, aka Citrus trifoliata) has invaded floodplains along Robeson Creek in Pittsboro (where it forms dense thickets), and I’ve seen it also in floodplains along Harlands Creek. Because the fruits are “heavy” (and have lots of seeds), they usually drop to the ground below the parent plant where they produce many seedlings. But when water is available to carry the fruits (as in a floodplain), they are capable of spreading downstream and invading new ground.

First, if you have not yet heard, the Bynum Front Porch Music Series is back! Every Friday night at 7 pm through August. Check the calendar at www.bynumfrontporch.org. Get your roots music on!

Also, catch ChathamArts’ improv instructor and comic genius, Anoo Brod this Saturday at “Spring Loaded” @ Elizabeth Kenan Theatre at UNC-CH. Call for reservations: 919-491-7745 or 919-923-1168. This event sold out last year, and I hope you’ll go and be inspired to register for ChathamArts’ next round of improv classes launching June 8.

It’s incredibly fun in a slightly terrifying way, you know, like the 76-foot free fall slide at Wet ‘n’ Wild. Take the class. It’ll make you a better person. Register for this and our other summer classes and youth camps at http://www.chathamarts.org/programs/programs-classes10.html
Marcelle Harwell Pachnowski, Lyn Sims, Florence Johnson, Stan Pomeranz, and
John Makowski say that they couldn’t stop laughing when they began
brainstorming fresh ways to make Chatham the “most colorful cultural
destination in the South.” They have a series of top secret efforts up their
sleeves, but the first one they’re unveiling is the “ChathamArts BRAvo!
Lingerie Soiree.”

Area artists and other local agencies and businesses have been working
tirelessly to help “support the arts with support bras during this sagging
economy.” They’ve knitted, welded, carved, and crafted a variety of “bra-art
sculptures,” which will be raffled at the “BRAvo! Soiree” on June 27th at
the City Tap from 4 – 7 pm. There’ll be live music, food, beverage, and foxy
male bra models there to flaunt the merchandise.
A BRAvo! preview is on exhibit at the ChathamArts Gallery throughout May and
June, 115 Hillsboro Street, Pittsboro, NC 27312. It’s not too late to submit
a bra of your own to the cause. Call 919-542-4144 or email

Saturday’s 9th Annual ClydeFEST was an absolute success in every definition of the word! Based on unofficial counts, the turnout hovered around 1000 children, parents, and grandparents who enjoyed the authentic, homemade, county fair whimsy of ClydeFEST. More importantly, the day made innumerable unforgettable happy memories for hundreds of citizens of Chatham County and beyond. There’s no better measure of success than that.

The Chatham County Arts Council is deeply and sincerely grateful for the generous gifts of time, boundless energy, and tremendous creativity from Clyde Jones and the residents in the Village of Bynum. In addition, ChathamArts thanks our ClydeFEST sponsors: Cap’t John’s Dockside Restaurant, Weaver Street Realty, Crook’s Corner, Chatham Homes Realty,

Judy Hogan’s passion to write led to valuing her time more than money. In 1998 she began farming to grow her own food and stay healthy and, of necessity, began inventing some very creative “solutions†to life’s challenges. Judy helped found the NC Writers Network, has published five books of poetry and two non-fiction works, writes regularly for the Chatham County Line, and teaches creative writing at Central Carolina Community College. Free to the public.
Subject: How Shakori Hills Celebrates Earth Day – April 22-25

Silk Hope, NC – This April 22 marks the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day! To celebrate, the Shakori Hills GrassRoots Festival of Music & Dance will be doing its part to reduce its footprint, to put the earth first, and to educate all festival attendees about how easy and fun it is to protect and care for our planet.

Throughout the weekend, as festival goers buy food, throw out their trash, and clean up the area around their camp site, they will notice Shakori Hills’s efforts to cut down on litter going to the landfill. All food vendors provide compostable plates, bowls, cups, and utensils, which are separated out at trash stations around the food area. There are also recycling and composting sites throughout the grounds. For a festival that has a peak of 8,000 attendees, that’s a lot of avoided garbage. To reduce plastic bottle use, festival goers can bring their own bottles and refill them with water from the Blue Green Machine. The Machine is a water filtering system that takes water from the local well and filters it, giving free water to anyone
who needs it, thanks to their owners, Kinetico.

Shakori Hills has also teamed up with The Abundance Foundation – a local organization whose purpose is to increase public awareness of sustainable energy usage and local food consumption in Chatham County. Together, the organizations are working on a plan to make the festival and its home solar power dependent in the next few years. Both organizations will be taking donations from the public at the festival, and will have a solar panel on display to show attendees how it works.

In an effort to promote alternate forms of fuel and of transportation, the festival has two separate shuttles that run on bio-diesel fuel to run folks to and from the festival. One shuttle
is sponsored by Ninth Street Bakery in Durham. It picks up in Durham, Chapel Hill, and Carrboro during the day and runs back at night, and the cost to ride is just $5. Customers riding this shuttle also get $5 off of their festival ticket at the gate. The second shuttle is sponsored by Piedmont Biofuels and Chatham Transport, and it runs back and forth to the local co-op grocery store Chatham Marketplace so that festival-goers can buy groceries and supplies they may need while camping. This shuttle is free! To find out shuttle times and stop locations, visit www.shakorihills.org/shuttles.

Shakori Hills has taken special care to create a place for people to learn about what effects,
good and bad, we as humans have on the earth. The
festival’s biggest tribute to the planet and the
holiday that celebrates it is the Earth Day Fair
(formerly called the Sustainability Fair). This
is a designated spot on the festival grounds
where there will be discussions, demonstrations,
and special guests. Activities are scheduled
=46riday through Sunday. A full list of Earth Day
=46air events can be found at
examples:

Making and Using Biodiesel Fuel, Chris Jude and
David Thornton, Piedmont Biofuels Design/Build.
Chris and David will lead a down and dirty
detailed presentation on this clean and renewable
alternative fuel. Learn from the experts how to
make one’s car, tractor, or home heating
earth-friendly machine! A primer on what
biodiesel is, how to use it, and even see a
hands-on biodiesel production in action. Also,
Piedmont will be on hand for fuel sales in the
parking lot by appointment. Friday at 2:30pm and

April 17 at Bynum Ball Park
ChathamArts’ ClydeFEST: Fun and games for all ages
Images available at http://www.chathamarts.org/programs/clydefest.html

BYNUM – The 9th Annual ChathamArts ClydeFEST celebrating legendary folk artist Clyde Jones promises a full day of fun and games, food and music. Festivities are set for Saturday April 17 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Clydeville at the Bynum Ballpark, just around the corner from Jones’ famous backyard full of cedar giraffes, alligators, deer, rabbits and other chain
saw “critters.” Admission is $7 for adults and $3 for children. Adult tickets include a chance to win a Clyde Critter. Bynum is located off of U.S. 15-501 between Pittsboro and Chapel Hill. For information: 919-542-0394, www.chathamarts.org (Rain date: April 18.)

While the self-taught artist’s works have been exhibited all over the world, and are on display all over Bynum, they are not for sale. Jones makes them available for charity auctions, and he’ll create one on the spot to auction off to the highest bidder at ClydeFest, with proceeds benefitting ChathamArts, the county’s nonprofit arts council.

As always, children will paint and glitter Clyde’s wooden animal cut-outs (butterflies, turtles, penguins and more) made especially to be taken home as signed souvenirs. Joining Jones in the artfully decorated ClydeMobile will be his buddy, Georgia folk artist Peter Loose, with his pet African tortoises.

The ClydeFEST stage will feature live music by Tommy Edwards and Friends, Sandbox, the Northwood High School Jazz Band, Dan the Magic Man, and Girls Rock North Carolina.

The Durham Symphony Orchestra will present a musical petting zoo and Can-Tr will have a pony on-site. The Abundance Foundation will explain how to make compost with worms and the Bynum Community Garden will show the kids how to grow vegetables. You can also learn about the Haw River Assembly and Friends of Pittsboro Library, among other participants.

What’s more, the Chatham County Schools Young Authors Award winners (to be named April 13) will read from their creative writing.

Ubi the Clown will hand out spontaneously sculpted balloon hats and toys. Kids can enjoy tic-tac-toe with tires and flowers, face painting, storytelling, hula hooping, magicians, fortune tellers, and be entertained by face painters, stiltwalkers, storytellers and more!

You won’t go hungry. The Immaculate Baking Company will create giant cookies shaped like Clyde Critters, which the kids can decorate.

There will be plenty of refreshments for sale by the Barbecue Joint, Chatham Marketplace, Liberacion Juice Station and Barney’s Hot Dogs.

Proceeds will benefit ChathamArts, the county nonprofit arts council, which supports arts in the schools, promotes the work of local artists through a Pittsboro gallery and sponsors a range of arts events and performances throughout the year.

Will Nathan Detroit find a place for “The Oldest Established Permanent Floating Crap Game in New York” before Big Jule arrives? Will Miss Adelaide finally get Nathan to the alter after 14 years? Will Sky get that Mission Doll Sgt. Sarah Brown to fly to Havana for DINNER? And most importantly, which is more popular—Mindy’s Cheesecake or Mindy’s Strudel?

The answers to these and other completely inconsequential questions will all be revealed when the Northwood Arts Education Department presents the 1950 Broadway classic, Guys & Dolls, March 25-27 at 7pm in Northwood’s Benjamin J. Lee Auditorium.

Based on Damon Runyon’s famous New York stories of the depression-era denizens of Broadway and Times Square, with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser, and book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows, Guys & Dolls includes some of the American musical theatre’s best known works—Luck Be A Lady, Bushel and a Peck, I’ve Never Been in Love Before, and Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat.

This year, in addition to the three 7pm performances, there will be a special Friday night “dinner theatre” option, featuring a pre-show Cuban dinner. Enjoy a “Night in Havana” from the Barbeque Joint that includes Cuban Roast Pork, Arroz con Pollo, Cuban Black Beans & Rice, salad greens and Flan for dessert. Proceeds benefit the NHSAEF Scholarship Fund.

Dr. Lori Carlin, directing her 13th spring production, commented, “In selecting our spring musical for the Gala season, we were looking for a big name show that would draw students and community members alike. Guys & Dolls has been called “the perfect musical comedy.” The show is big, bright, fun, and engaging. We’ve produced it once before and have fond memories of that experience. This year we are taking a fresh approach to producing this classic show. Our student performers and technicians have their work cut out for them but I feel certain that we will find a way to exhibit the talent & spirit that Northwood students bring to the stage every year. And we are looking forward to sharing Guys & Dolls in our beautiful newly renovated auditorium!”

Tickets are available online at http://www.SeatYourself.biz/northwood. General admission is $8 for adults, $6 for seniors and children under 5. Reserved seats are $10 and tickets for the friday night dinner and show are $24. Dinner seating is from 5:30–6:20 pm.

The Northwood High School Arts Education Foundation (NHSAEF), a 501(c)(3) non-profit, all-volunteer organization, is a community initiative dedicated to ensuring excellence in arts education by identifying, creating, and supporting programs that enrich learning, foster student achievement, and increase community involvement.
