Subject: 6th Annual Pollinator Day Saturday!

Come join the Chatham County Center of North Carolina Cooperative Extension and the Chatham County Beekeepers’ Association for our 6th Annual Pollinator Day Celebration on Saturday, May 12, from 10:00 am til 2:00 pm on the lawn at Chatham Mills in Pittsboro. The purpose of Pollinator Day is to raise public awareness of the importance of the bees and other pollinators that are needed to produce 80 percent of our flowering plants and one third of our food crops.

We have a great program planned for folks of all ages: you can hear presentations about beekeeping and learn all about what it takes to produce the delicious local honey available at Chatham Marketplace. We will have beekeeping equipment and products from the hive for “show and tell”.

Tour Cooperative Extension’s Pollinator Garden at Chatham Mills and learn how to attract and protect bees and other pollinators.

We will also be giving away plants and gift certificates donated by local nurseries Mellow Marsh Farm, Cure Nursery, Niche Gardens, and Big Bloomers!

Watch expert beekeepers work an actual hive inside a bee cage, see honey bees up close and personal, and get your burning beekeeping questions answered.

Ever tried honey wine? Co-sponsors Starrlight Mead will be doing mead tastings and a mead making demonstration. Visitors can also visit the meadery where they produce their award-winning honey wines on the Chatham Mills property!

We’ll have lots of activities for kids including a plant-a-pollinator-plant, beeswax candle making, face painting, balloon pollinators, Chatham County pollinator coloring books, and more! Watch “Bee TV” – park yourself in front of an observation hive and watch the worker bees tending to the queen. It’s mesmerizing!

What would one do to make sure snakes DO NOT get inside? How do they enter? Would moth balls at door entrances do it? I have to say if one appears in my living quarters MY PANTS WILL NEVER DRY!! I get hysterical.

Subject: My two cents on the issue of the day

Please allow me to offer my perspective on this burning issue that is being discussed on the Chatlist.  At the risk of being labeled a Bible thumper, I do believe the scriptures can provide guidance on this question.

I am talking about, of course, the issue of snakes in people’s houses.

The Bible says about believers, “They will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them.”  So stay in Word and you can grab that copperhead in complete safety and toss it out the door! (What you drink afterwards is totally up to you.)

Subject: baby snake in the house..where’s momma??

Well Tammy..  I had one too!  I found it in my kitchen near a cabinet on last Sunday afternoon. 

I was able to catch by putting a clear container on top of it and a heavy pot.  When my husband came home we got a lid under it and were able to have it safely contained in the clear plastic container. 

Then we went online to look at close up pictures because we weren’t sure if it was a copperhead.  The marking were similar but it was more gray than brown. It was small and young.  We found out happily it was a young rat snake.  So we too released it outside the next day.  Hope it takes care of the voles and moles making holes in the yard. 

I’d also like to know…  where is the nest?  or the momma and daddy?   Pat

Hi Folks,

I just finished trapping and taking outside into the woods a small, juvenile? Copperhead snake from INSIDE MY HOUSE!!!

I had fallen asleep on the couch and when I awoke, I saw 2 of my cats stalking it as it slithered across my hardwood floor!!!   I was TERRIFIED!!!

I got my cats away from it and it went behind my door and curled up.  I got a box and able to get it inside and then quickly and quite frankly, terrified, ran outside with it.

I then came back inside and checked to make sure all my cats were fine without any bites.

My concern:  COULD THERE BE MORE INSIDE????   This is the very first snake I’ve seen inside my house in 15 years.  How do I make sure this doesn’t happen again???   I’m so worried and I have a feeling I’m going to be jumping at shadows for quite sometime!!!!

PITTSBORO, N.C. — Carolina Tiger Rescue is launching Big Cat Safari, the five-day camp will host children ages 9-11. Big Cat Safari will be offered for two sessions — Monday, June 4, 2012 through Friday, June 8, 2012 and Monday, June 11, 2012 through Friday, June 15, 2012. Each day will run from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and will feature educational activities, projects, games and more. Campers will study the preservation and care of these endangered species, and observe the animal behaviors of Carolina Tiger Rescue’s species, some of which are not normally available on weekend tours. They will utilize scientific techniques and creative expression to develop lifelong learning skills.

Each child will earn the title of Big Cat Ambassador. They will have the knowledge and tools necessary to make educated decisions on how they can support conservation actions that directly help exotic cats in the captivity and in the wild.

Enrollment is limited to ten children per week, and preference will be given to Carolina Tiger Rescue’s members and their families. Carolina Tiger Rescue is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit wildlife sanctuary that is dedicated to saving and protecting wildcats in captivity and the wild. Heads Up! Therapeutic Riding Program is proud to announce the May opening of The Tack Room at 115 Hillsboro Street in historic downtown Pittsboro.  The Tack Room is a resale shop specializing in donated and consigned horse related items and will feature a “Barn Buddy Boutique” for dogs and cats. The opening date for the store will be Saturday, May 12th at 10:30am. 

On Saturday May 5th (one week before the store opening), Heads Up! will also host its annual Kentucky Derby Party fundraiser from 3 – 7.   The location of this party has changed to The Tack Room to give folks the opportunity to see where our new store will be located.

The Derby Party is always a fun event with good food, music, and a great silent auction. This year’s event is shaping up to be even better!   In keeping with the Derby tradition, we will be serving mint juleps and a gourmet Southern buffet.      There will be a Hat Contest for the ladies, a wonderful silent auction including artwork from local artists, music, and live coverage of the race.
