CHEF CHALLENGE TO RETURN FOR SECOND YEAR

On Leap Day, Chef Colin Bedford gazed at a table full of ingredients ranging from canned cling peaches and whole grain pasta, to local sweet potatoes and fresh spinach in efforts to plan a delicious, healthy meal. He was not designing a menu for his Chatham County restaurant, The Fearrington House, but a new lunch menu for the more than 8000 youth of Chatham County Public Schools.

Subject: Honeybee swarms

Before you call someone to get your bees you need to know who you are calling.

My friend who is a master beekeeper in the North Carolina Beekeepers Assoc.  has been keeping honey bees for over 32 years now. He is the first beekeeper in Chatham County to be certified a master beekeeper. He has 37 years of knowledge in construction. If you have bees in your walls or in a tree and as a matter of fact anywhere and you want them removed he is the person to call.  You will not only get the bees removed but you will get an education on the workings of the honeybee and the colony.

Organic Weed Control Suggestion

March 21st, 2012 · No Comments

Subject: Organic Weed Control Suggestion for Joyce

A couple days ago, Joyce Bryan asked for suggestions about how to control weeds in her gravel driveway. Lots of products are promoted as effective but I’m yet to find a better option than using high heat from a propane torch. This method uses no chemicals, is completely organic, introduces no hazardous materials onto the ground or into the water supply, and kills weeds and their seeds dead.

Al Cooke is an excellent extension agricultural agent

Subject: extension agricultural agent

I would also like to commend Al Cooke’s service to the county. My husband was his counterpart in  New Hampshire until we retired here three years ago. My husband has taken advantage of many programs offered. During  my husbands thirty year tenure, I learned lots about the system.  There are motivated and effective agents and there are  some less than effective.

Believe me, Al Cooke is excellent!

A farm is just a bigger, messier fish bowl

February 22nd, 2012 · No Comments

From: Jackie Strouble
Subject: Re: re: sad fish at the Chatham Library

Mr. Dova’s response tickled me. He accuses the original poster of having a skewed, citified perspective, and then goes on to describe a farm as “the natural world.” Mr. Dova, a farm is just a bigger, messier fish bowl. It has about as much resemblance to the natural world as does downtown Detroit. It’s a factory with mud and grass, where animals are exploited to sustain humans. And, yes, that’s where my food comes from too, and no, I’m not a vegetarian, and no I’m not disrespecting farmers. My favorite place in the whole world was my grandmother’s farm where I spent countless hours as a kid. I wanted to grow up and have a farm just like hers until I did grow up a little and I realized how much work and risk was involved.
