As someone who worked a tree surgeon and climber of more than ten years, I will verify that the chain saw is a tool which can easily cause serious damage. I consider myself lucky that I have all my appendages and faculties (though some might disagree on the last.)
Knowledge and training are only partial guarantees of successful operation of the chain saw. I urge focus on safety first. Accidents comes swiftly and without remorse.

Subject: Watch out for falling trees
I’ve just received the most recent warning from Chatham County offices
http://www.chathamnc.org/index.aspx?recordid=1635&page=19
about safety issues related to the predicted winter weather we’re all preparing for. Some good suggestions there and I commend it to your attention. One of the items mentioned is the potential for downed trees on power lines and blocking roads.
This is the worst possible situation for using a chainsaw. Many of us think we know how to use one. But when trees fall, there are many more safety issues to consider. First of course is whether a “hot” electric line is involved. None of us needs to go there.

Subject: Propane Prices
I got a fill up back in August and it was $2.099 a gallon. I ordered more in early January and it was $2.559- I use Southern States in Siler City. I’ve had 2 guys at work in Burlington say they were charged over $3 a gallon. One said something like $3.249 and the other said $3.949 but that sounded like a ripoff on their elderly mother. I used to pay 99 cents a gallon for summer fill up from Southern States about 9 or 10 years ago. It has more than doubled since then and it does not get cheap in the summer like it used to.

Subject: Free Income Tax Service
Yes, your 2009 Federal and North Carolina income tax can be prepared and filled electronically (e-file) for free. Chatham County residents can take advantage of this service sponsored by the IRS, Orange County RSVP and the Chatham County Council on Aging. The service is designed to assist low to middle income taxpayers of all ages. It is called the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program providing computerized preparation of your 2009 income tax by IRS trained and certified preparers. In addition, by taking advantage of the e-file or electronic filing capability, you will receive any refund due in half the time compared to returns filed on paper and even faster when tax refunds are deposited directly into one’s bank account.

Our house was in need of pressure cleaning and the front and back decks needed to be stripped and re-sealed. I looked on the chatlist for a recommendation of one who could do this and came across an advertisement from Andy Jones describing the work we needed to have done.

In response to Carole about plane vapor trails.
Dear Chatamite, those trails you see are over 16 miles up and made by military fighter jets. The trails come out when the go to mach 2 speed in the sky which they can do for a while. The trails are a combination of water vapor and exhaust from the engines but dissapte long before they hit the ground.

Hi Frances,
The best piano tuner I have found is David Mainesmith. He spent hours restoring and tuning my 100+ year old piano and he’s extremely reasonable. http://artisticpianotuning.com/ or
