We have recently learned that Philip Dark of Oakmont Nursery (Hwy 64, east of Siler City) has been recognized as Grower of the Year by the North Carolina Nursery and Landscape association.  Philip and the Nursery were recognized for professionalism and leadership in local, regional, state, and national organizations.  Philip has been generous with his time and knowledge while serving on agriculture advisory boards both local and statewide including the Board of Advisors of the JC Raulston Arboretum at NC State University in Raleigh.

While Philip is known locally as a nurseryman with high quality plants, he is perhaps better known nationally and internationally as a breeder of Gardenias.  His ‘Crown Jewel’ is regarded for both its extensive display of flowers as well as its cold tolerance.  He has recently introduced his newer selection ‘Prince Charles,’ a compact Gardenia noted for outstanding fragrance.  And if you listen carefully, he may share a look at a few other “interesting” plants that he is evaluating for possible introduction in the near future.

Congratulations!
