Many retail outlets have a policy against reducing the price of damaged goods. The reasoning is that doing so would encourage some people to damage something intentionally to get a reduced price.

My experience in this situation was that when I explained prices weren’t discounted for damage, the response almost all the time was, But it’s for a gift!

As if that made any sense either.
